BOYS' SWIMMER OF THE YEAR: CARPENTER HAMMERED OPPONENTS.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

Kenny Carpenter knows better than anyone that time is everything in swimming. The Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  High junior thrives in a sport where a split second can separate a winner from a loser. He rarely experiences defeat, yet he often finds himself worrying about the clock.

Carpenter's problem lies in finding enough time to spend in the pool. While he doesn't mind being the first one out of the water at races, Carpenter has noticed the effects of the many demands that cut into his training time - demands such as interviews, studying for Advanced Placement exams

Advanced Placement examinations are taken each May by students at participating Canadian, American, and international educational institutions. The tests are the culmination of year-long AP courses.
     and occasional socializing.

``I had struggled with getting to practice before junior nationals,'' he said of the early season meet which many consider to have been the All-American's turning point. ``I had so many commitments, with school and everything, I just couldn't make it to the pool every day. I was kind of mad because, I didn't do poorly, but I didn't do what I wanted to do. That made me drive more to get to practice and get my workouts in every day and it paid off.''

The payoff was his first two individual Southern Section Division II titles, a team title, and league and division records, which earned him Daily News boys' swimmer of the year honors.

``That's a tribute to him,'' Falcons coach Pete Loporchio said. ``He's had continued improvement even with all his success. Many times you see swimmers reach a certain level, especially in high school, and plateau. He kept improving. It really paid off for him at CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF). .

``What you saw at CIF was his ability to finish at the end. In the past at CIF - particularly in the 100 fly - his problem was he'd start to tire out to weary or fatigue to exhaustion; to harass.

This year, he was very strong the second half.''A rigorous weight-training program as well as his workouts in the pool helped Carpenter set Pacific League records in the 200 freestyle The code name for the MCE version of Windows. He saved his best performance of the season for the division finals, where he won the 200 free and broke the division record in the 100 fly with a 49.47 finish. Carpenter was named the male swimmer of the meet as Crescenta Valley won the division team championship.

``All the records are nice and everything, but winning the team title is the most special,'' said Carpenter, who was named Crescenta Valley's scholar-athlete of the year for swimming. ``I was disappointed in the water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. I just wanted to make sure we got our title this time and weren't upset again.''

As impressive as his achievements sound, many believe Carpenter's best performances are yet to come. His self-proclaimed best event - the 200 butterfly - isn't offered in high school competitions.

    ``With Kenny, I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

what his potential is,'' Loporchio said. ``He has a lot of versatility. He could do equally well in a number of events.''

Carpenter, whose goal is to compete in the 2000 Olympics, hasn't been invincible, though.

Hart junior Ryan Parmenter is one of the few high school swimmers to defeat Carpenter this season, doing so twice in the 200 free.

``I beat him, but he won the big one,'' said Parmenter, who placed third at the Southern Section finals, .13 seconds behind Carpenter. ``By the time he tapered ta·per
