BOYS' SOUTHERN SECTION: VALENCIA SENT TO THE LIMIT BY PESKY ARCADIA VIKINGS SURVIVE LAST-SECOND ATTEMPT.

between the final regular season and the first-round of the Southern Section boys' basketball playoffs sure didn't help Valencia High.

The Foothill League champions nearly blew a first-round Div. I-AA matchup at home against lightly regarded Arcadia, falling behind by 10 points in the first half before escaping with a 50-49 victory at Valencia High on Friday night.

Erick Sevilla's 3-pointer with 40 seconds remaining was the difference, but Valencia (21-6) couldn't take a deep breath until Arcadia's Cameron Benton missed an open 8-footer at the buzzer.

``We were a little nervous but we adjusted. We're going to have to step up and be a lot better next game,'' Sevilla said.

Eleventh-seeded Valencia plays the Lakewood/Montebello winner in a second-round game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at a site to be determined.

The victory was Valencia's 11th in the past 12 games. However, the focus is on the future considering the Vikings have never advanced past the section quarterfinals in the school's 11-year history.

Daniel Alexander, averaging 22.2 points, scored 26 for Arcadia (12-16). Benton added 13, and Brent Lagace had eight, but the only other player to score a basket for Arcadia was Tejas Galau (two points).

The game was Alexander's last. He has committed to a Long Beach State volleyball scholarship, and he broke into tears after the buzzer.

``We were actually pretty confident coming in,'' Alexander said. ``I love this game but I was getting tired at the end. I play all 32 minutes every game.''

Valencia's David Horst scored 17, and Sevilla added eight.
