But Quartz Hill rebounded with a 2-0 victory over Hart of Newhall on Saturday afternoon and then beat Canyon that night on penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie.

``We played pretty well against Hart and I thought we played a great game against Canyon,'' Matalon said.

--Fit to be tied: After losing three shoot-out tiebreakers this season and playing seven games that went to shoot-outs over the summer, Canyon has had enough of penalty kicks.

``Finally,'' said Canyon goalkeeper Wayne Johnson, who made two saves in the match. ``We've gotten a consistent lineup of good shooters now.''

--Net worth: Highland realized Saturday how much it had missed forward Sergio Perez.

Perez was unavailable for the team's 4-1 loss to Claremont on Friday night because of a red card he received earlier in the week. He returned to the lineup Saturday against Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. ``We're more hungry for the goals when he's playing,'' Highland goalkeeper Dwayht Guillen said. ``We missed his spirit.''

Highland was eliminated from the tournament with 2-0 loss to Camarillo on Saturday night.

--Time to recoup: After playing 12 games in two weeks, the Saugus boys' team can rest and practice before returning to play Friday in the consolation bracket.

``We haven't had any time to practice,'' said John Kachorsky, who coached the Centurions last weekend. ``With game after game, you can't work on too many things.''

Saugus, which reached the finals of the Burroughs tournament a week ago, finished the weekend with an 11-0 rout of Burroughs of Ridgecrest. Stephen Lopez led with five goals.

``It was kind of a revenge win,'' Kachorsky said. ``They were frustrated.''

The Centurions lost to Reseda on penalty kicks Friday and were beaten 2-0 by Dos Pueblos on Saturday morning.
