BOYS' SOCCER PREVIEW: ST. FRANCIS HOPES TO FINALIZE THINGS KNIGHTS' 1ST TITLE GAME BIG CHALLENGE.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

Missed opportunities have been St. Francis' modus operandi [Latin, Method of working.] A term used by law enforcement authorities to describe the particular manner in which a crime is committed.

The term modus operandi is most commonly used in criminal cases. It is sometimes referred to by its initials, M.O.
. That had better change today if the Knights of La Canada are to have any hope of upsetting Woodbridge of Irvine in the Southern Section Division II boys' soccer final.

Not only is Woodbridge (17-1-4) the third-ranked team in the country, it has given up just nine goals all season. Woodbridge also is determined after losing 1-0 to Los Alamitos Los Alamitos (lôs ăləmē`təs, lŏs), city (1990 pop. 11,676), Orange co., NE of Long Beach, S Calif., in a suburban area; inc. 1960. Los Alamitos Racetrack and U.S. military installations are nearby.  in last year's final.

``From that experience, we know what it's like to have something taken away right at the end,'' said Woodbridge coach Jon Szczuka, whose team hasn't lost since its season opener against Poly of Riverside. ``It's just a matter of finishing our season off right.''

The team features four players bound for Division I schools next year, led by senior midfielder

In association football, a midfielder is a player whose position of play is midway between the attacking strikers and the defenders (highlighted in blue on the diagram).
Eric Ebert, who has signed with California.

That is almost the opposite of St. Francis (26-5), which boasts a starless team anchored by junior goalkeeper Tashi Nakanishi and senior defenders Daniel Caldwell and Jeff Fawcett, both among the area's best. Sophomore Jeff Buddenbohn and senior Luke Postlewaite are the Knights' two biggest scoring threats.

``If it were football or basketball, you'd look at it and say we have next to no chance,'' coach Glen Appels said. ``But in soccer, you always have that chance. There have been so many upsets in the past. ... We just have to defend and finish our chances to be successful.''

For St. Francis, it will be the 610-student school's first appearance in the Division II final after being moved up to the division with the rest of the Mission League this season. The Knights also will be bidding for a section title in a third different division.

In other finals today:

Grant has won seven consecutive games, and senior striker Johny Amaya is one score away from reaching the 30-goal milestone for the season. Amaya already owns Grant's single-season scoring record and will play today even though the City will wait until Tuesday to rule on his eligibility.

It could come during a rare season in which Paraclete's football team failed to win a championship.

``It's kind of nice to step out of football's shadow a little bit,'' Paraclete coach Pat McIver said. ``We're actually getting some notoriety NOTORIETY, evidence. That which is generally known.
