BOYS' SOCCER PREVIEW: SAUGUS HAS TOOLS TO WIN LEAGUE TITLE TALENT, DEPTH COULD SPELL TROUBLE FOR FOOTHILL FOES.

SAUGUS - Selecting the lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime.  is one of the most difficult parts of coaching the Saugus High boys' soccer team this season. ``I've never had this amount of depth in the 20 years I've been coaching,'' Wright said.

The Centurions, who finished third in the Foothill League last season, believe depth will make them contenders for their first league title since 1996.

League play doesn't start until January, but Saugus already is in the form it hopes to use to dethrone de·throne

defending Foothill-champion Canyon. The Centurions were undefeated entering this weekend's championship round of the Burroughs tournament and had not allowed a goal through four games.

``It's a good group of kids who just click together,'' Wright said. ``It's hard to choose, because you can put anyone in there. We've been platooning, because we don't lose anything and it keeps everyone functional. I don't want any dead legs, especially with the tournaments, where there's a lot of games. So it's nice to have that kind of flexibility.''

Among the vacancies the Centurions had to fill was in goal. Junior Lucas Pepi and senior Adam Yassman filled the void well enough to be described by Wright as ``the strongest goalie combination I've had.''

The remainder of the players are capable of playing a variety of positions.

Senior Mike Sifferman's quickness and ball-handling skills make him one of the leading forwards. Danny Juodvalkis also is doing well at forward after being bothered by knee injuries the past few years.

Junior Danny Girch is among the top midfielders and sweeper Nick Menente anchors the defense.

The team's chemistry, not to mention its success, keeps playing time from being an issue.

``I don't think they have a problem with it,'' Wright said. ``The feeling is, there's talent on the bench, why not use it? It's not like I have 10 players and it drops off after that. With this kind of depth, if someone's tired or not doing their job, I can just put someone else in. And since they can play more than one position, it's really given us balance no matter who's in there.''
