BOYS' SOCCER PREVIEW: LOOKING FOR REDEMPTION NO. 1-RANKED CANOGA PARK RETURNS BULK OF LINEUP FROM LAST SEASON'S ONE-LOSS TEAM.

Byline: HEATHER GRIPP Staff Writer

Canoga Park High spent all but about 15 minutes last season as the most dominant team in City Section boys' soccer. Those few minutes were enough to deny the Hunters a City title and make them intent on not allowing even the slightest of letups in this season's quest for Verb 1. quest for - go in search of or hunt for; "pursue a hobby"

It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999). , making the Hunters the favorite for this season's title and the No. 1 team in the Daily News rankings to start the season.

``They're going to be very good,'' said Birmingham coach E.B. Madha, whose team ended Canoga Park's 23-game winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

Canoga Park starts nine seniors and two juniors, all returning varsity players. The Hunters are so rich in talent that they don't even plan to use All-City goalkeeper Cesar Ventura as their primary goalie after he was granted an extra year of eligibility.

Senior midfielder Jeffrey Quijano, who has committed to Michigan, is another key part of the mix. Seniors Eddie Ponce and Joao Lopez anchor a defense that posted 16 shutouts last season, including 11 in a row and four in the City playoffs.

``We're pretty much the same team, except we're older, we're more experienced,'' Canoga Park coach Jake Gwin said. ``One of the things that will help for us is being game-tough. That hurt us last year.

``When faced with a challenge like Birmingham gave us in the final last year, we'll be ready. They came out fired up to beat us, and when they took the lead, we fell apart. We let up for about 15minutes and saw what a good team can do to you when that happens. This year, we'll know how to respond to those situations. Last year, we weren't really battle-tested during the year.''

The Hunters begin their season today at defending Valley Mission League co-champion SanFernando. Their biggest test comes at the end of the month when they compete among the national elite in the West Coast High School Classic at Cal State Fullerton.

Local threats en route to the City title could include a San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina
