BOYS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: WINNING COMES NATURALLY.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Four losses in two years. That's how often the Quartz Hill High boys' soccer team has lost.

And the Rebels could be better than ever next season, with a significant number of players eligible to return. The added experience will make the team that much tougher to beat.

Quartz Hill enters today's game against Palmdale with a 22-2-1 record and hasn't lost since it fell to Reseda in the semifinal of the Hart tournament in late December. The Rebels said they've outscored the opposition approximately 70-6.

Seniors such as Mark Cipolla, Vincent Stephano and Marcus Jackson will be leaving the program. However, others will be there to step up.

In association football, a midfielder is a player whose position of play is midway between the attacking strikers and the defenders (highlighted in blue on the diagram).

--Endless supply of goalies: Quartz Hill has had trouble keeping its goalkeepers healthy, but the Rebels have so much talent at the position, they haven't suffered.

Senior Eric Torres' season appears to be over after suffering a second concussion concussion

. That means last year's starter, Ian McClung, is back in the starting role.

``Ian McClung is great,'' Rebels coach Andre Matalon said. ``It just so happened Eric came out and won me over. He was diving diving

To fill Torres' spot on the roster, freshman Mike Davis was called up from the junior varsity and played in Wednesday's 7-1 victory over Antelope Valley.

--Solid on both sides: Lancaster confirmed its offensive ability when it scored a season-high 10 goals last week against Antelope Valley. This week, the Eagles are focusing on their defense.

The improved defense led to a 2-2 tie against Palmdale on Wednesday. The Falcons had previously defeated Lancaster 4-1.

``Our defense held up a lot better,'' Eagles coach Walter Schultz said. ``The only difference this time was we played a lot better defense.''

A well-rounded attack is needed again today when Lancaster plays host to Highland in a game that could decide second place.
