BOYS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: RUGGED SCHEDULE HART HOPING IT PAYS OFF ONCE LEAGUE STARTS.

This weekend should provide the perfect opportunity for the Hart of Newhall boys' soccer team to perfect its physical style of play against quality teams.

The Indians, who are hoping their hustle and an aggresive approach intimidates oppnents and makes up for a less-killed team than in previous years, face several of the region's top teams at the Royal tournament that begins today in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

Although the schedule hasn't produced the prettiest record - Hart is 3-2 - Indians first-year coach Robert Ciccone said the competiton is exactly what his team needs to defend its league title.

``We've got a tough schedule, which I don't mind,'' Ciccone said. ``It gets us ready.

``At first they were wondering why. I explained to them it's better to face the good teams early. If you play too many easy teams, you start thinking you're better than you are. I don't mind losing a couple in the preseason; that's what the preseason is for.''

--Good and the bad: Saugus took third place in the Burroughs tournament by beating Newbury Park in penalty kicks Monday after playing to a 1-1 tie in regulation. The victory over a team considered to be a Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. After scoring at least three goals in each of their first three games of the tournament, the Centurions scored just one in the final two. Saugus was shut out by Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary.  leads Saugus with seven goals and was named to the Burroughs all-tournament team along with Centurions defender Carlos Reynoso. But not even Lpez is immune to Saugus' shooting woes. He was awarded a penalty kick Wednesday, but the shot was off target.

The Centurions, who play eight games in a 10-day span ending Saturday, have a chance to get back on track today when they face Reseda at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the Royal tournament.

--It's back: The Hart tournament was canceled last season because of a lack of entries, but organizers made sure to schedule the event at a time that doesn't conflict with other local tournaments this year and the competition is back. Sixteen teams in each the boys' and girls' fields are scheduled to take part Dec. 26-28 at Hart High.

 of El Camino Real fight fo the ball during a recent game. A tough preleague schedule has resulted in a 3-2 start for Hart, but Indians coach Robert Ciccone believes his Foothill League team will be stronger because of that competition.
