BOYS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: PALMDALE STILL THREAT IN LEAGUE.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Palmdale boys' soccer coach Jeremy Kriss didn't think his team would defend its Golden League title entering the season. He wasn't even sure if the Falcons could make the playoffs after graduating 15 seniors.

But one game into league play, Palmdale showed it will not give up its title easily. The Falcons made a statement in the league opener, upsetting Lancaster 1-0 to improve to 9-3-4 on the season.

``I was a little concerned at the beginning of the season,'' Kriss said. ``I had the feeling we'd be fairly good and then challenge next year. But now I think we're definitely a playoff play·off also play-off

With all those seniors on last year's team, there wasn't much room for underclassmen to contribute. That left a raw team with little varsity experience.

Jose Garay, a junior who is one of the few returning starters, has become the team leader. He has 14 goals and five assists, which is already comparable to his numbers last season, when he had 16 goals and four assists.

``I felt confident last year knowing we had so many seniors,'' Garay said. ``Entering this season it was a little scary scar·y

. But now that I've seen how our team plays, I'm not scared.''

Going from the sophomore on a senior-laden team to the player everyone looks up to has been different for Garay, but he is adjusting.

``I figured they would be nervous like I was last year so I try to do my part to just calm them down,'' Garay said.

--Next challenge: Palmdale can get a big jump on the rest of the league by winning at Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill on Friday. The Rebels, ranked No. 8 in the area with a record of 8-3-3, came from behind to tie in their first two Golden League games.

However, the Rebels lost out to Highland and then Palmdale the past two years, even though they entered those seasons as the favorites.

Bent, who has scored 16 goals, is certain that will change this season. He's predicting a league title.

``This year, Quartz Hill is taking league,'' Bent said. ``We'll come out on top against Palmdale. I'm confident that we will.''
