BOYS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: FOOTHILL SEEKING SOME PLAYOFF SUCCESS.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Hart boys' soccer coach Robert Ramirez made a point to talk to Canyon coach Khris Savage before Tuesday's showdown. Ramirez wanted to give the Cowboys' first-year coach a brief review of the Foothill League's recent postseason history and let him know how important it was that this year be different.

``Our league has to represent itself better this year,'' Ramirez said.

There are encouraging signs that the league is ready for a strong postseason showing. First-place Hart, undefeated in league, has lost just two of 21 games this season. Saugus and Canyon lack impressive overall records, but they have demonstrated they can hold their own against top teams.

``They're a very good team,'' Ramirez said of the Cowboys.

into this year's playoff hunt. The Vikings, who appeared to face another rebuilding season when they entered league action with only one victory, climbed into a tie for third place with Canyon by winning two of their past three games.

Valencia's biggest win was a 2-1 decision over Canyon on Jan. 20. A 2-1 victory Tuesday over Burroughs of Burbank moved the Vikings (4-10-3, 3-3-1) into the third-place tie.

--Fit to be tied: Three consecutive ties have dropped Saugus seven points behind Hart with three games remaining. The streak started with a 1-1 tie against Hart in the first-half league finale For the music notation program, see .

, and it continued with a 2-2 draw Friday against Burroughs and another 2-2 draw Tuesday against last-place Burbank.

Saugus faces Hart next week in the regular-season finale.

--In the rankings: Hart climbed to No. 8 in this week's Div. II rankings. But the Indians' coach isn't about to point it out to his players.

``I don't even share that with them,'' Ramirez said. ``I don't want that to get in their heads. I don't even know if they know about it. We don't talk about it.''

--Decision time: Wednesday was the first day of the signing period for boys' soccer players intending to play in college. The Foothill League's top player, Hart's Matt Valaika, did not sign because he has committed to UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  as a baseball player.
