BOYS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: CHAPARRAL NEXT UP FOR ST. FRANCIS.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

St. Francis High of La Canada boys' soccer coach Glen Appels can see the similarities between his team and the one it will face in today's Southern Section Division II semifinal. But he still is surprised to be playing Chaparral chaparral (chăpərăl`), type of plant community in which shrubs are dominant. It occurs usually in regions having from 10 to 20 in. Now the Pumas will play at St. Francis (25-5) today at 3 p.m. in the first semifinal in school history.

``We had seen Santa Barbara play in Florida and they were very good,'' said Appels, whose team played in December's Student Sports Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

In Division V, Paraclete of Lancaster will be making its first semifinal appearance in coach Pat McIver's tenure today. But the Spirits (22-5-1) will have to stop Salesian of Los Angeles' high-powered offense on the road to advance.

Salesian (23-2-1) was seeded second for the playoffs and is one of the highest-scoring teams left in any division, averaging five goals a game.

--Amaya update: Grant of Van Nuys principal Sandra Cruz made the final decision Wednesday to allow senior striker Johny Amaya to play the remainder of the City Section playoffs despite not having a section ruling on Amaya's eligibility.

Amaya had been held out of Grant's first-round game against Birmingham of Lake Balboa on Feb. 21 when Patriots coach E.B. Madha alleged he played in a Feb. 9 weekend league game in violation of section rules.

``I made sure I crossed all my T's and dotted all the I's,'' Cruz said. ``I'm not going to put any of my students in a bad situation. I'm not going to jeopardize jeop·ard·ize

Second-seeded Grant, playing in its first semifinal since 1982, will host No. 3 Jordan of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  on Wednesday at 3 p.m. for a spot in the City final.
