BOYS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: CANYON REMAINS BUSY, JUMPS TO A 7-1 START.

Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer

The Canyon boys' soccer team has been busy in nonleague action so far this season. Busy, and good.

The Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

Canyon is 7-1 heading into the winter break, and the team won't play again until January, when it opens league play with a home game against Saugus on Jan. 10.

``We played well in that game,'' said Canyon coach Pete Getz of the 3-0 loss to Quartz Hill. ``The score didn't indicate the overall game.''

Canyon went down by three goals in the first 20 minutes but buckled down defensively after the early collapse.

The Cowboys proved they learned their lesson Tuesday, when they fought back from a three-goal deficit to beat Highland of Palmdale 6-5.

``We went into halftime down 3-2, then they went up 5-3, and we came back and won,'' Getz said. ``The game ended on a penalty kick. Canyon usually doesn't have that kind of luck.''

This year, Getz thinks the team again will contend for top honors.

Getz, but they couldn't pull together and play as a team. Six of Canyon's starters from last season are now playing college soccer.

``This year we've got a lot of skill,'' Getz said. ``And a great group of guys.''

Senior Bryan Louzil anchors the Cowboys from the goalkeeper position. He was named the MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Louzil has let in 11 goals so far this season; five in the victory over Highland. He is fronted by sophomore John Crownwell, who is young but physical, according to Getz.

``We're very excited,'' Getz said. ``We're going to do some training (over the break). Our league will be tough this year, but we're going to be a team to contend with.''

--A crowded Christmas: All the playing fields at Hart High will be full from Dec. 26 to 28, when the Indians' annual tournament takes place.

Because the Arroyo tournament, which usually coincides with the Hart tournament, was canceled this year, Hart had added two more teams to its field of sixteen and turned away more than that.

``I had to refuse a lot of teams,'' Hart coach Robert Ciccone said.

The tournament also includes a 12-team girls' draw.

The format for the boys' draw is similar to a World Cup bracket: There are six groups of three, and the first team in each group will advance to the next round, in addition to two wild cards Symbols used to represent any value when selecting specific files. Hart will look to defend its title after winning its own tournament for the first time in fifteen years last season.
