BOYS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: CANYON HAS SCORE TO SETTLE WITH HART.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Canyon will take the field for the first Foothill League boys' soccer game of the season Friday ready to defend its title, but the players will have a difficult time feeling like champions when they look to the other sideline sideline

won the title, both of their league losses came to Hart. The rivals face off at Canyon at 3:15 p.m.

It's the rare occasion where the second-place team holds the mental edge over the champions.

``We usually play well against tough teams,'' Hart coach Robert Ciccone said. ``When we play weaker teams is when we start playing kick ball and don't play our game.''

That's what happened last year, when Canyon and Hart clearly were the class of the league. But Hart lost to Saugus, Burroughs of Burbank and tied twice.

``We didn't win the games we needed to win last year to be the champion,'' Hart forward Devin Del Do said. ``So I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if we can say we deserved to win it.''

Even if it can claim the championship, last season wasn't complete for Canyon. The players want a victory over Hart as much as they want to defend their title.

``The first couple of (league) games are the most important, they set the tone for the season,'' Canyon coach Pete Getz said. ``These guys are upset. Even though they won league last year, it wasn't as sweet without beating Hart.''

--Slow start: Canyon had one of the area's shortest preseason schedules. The Cowboys (3-2-1) have played fewer than half the games of Hart (8-5-2), partially because four games were canceled in September.

Canyon didn't play in the Hart tournament because Getz doesn't like to see league teams before league play. The Cowboys played in one tournament in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. .

``There are advantages and disadvantages,'' Getz said. ``We're going into league play fresh and completely healthy, which is a first for me. But we're also inexperienced in·ex·pe·ri·ence

``This league has always had a star goalie,'' Getz said. ``We seem to have pushed all the good goalies out and now we all seem to be in the same boat, trying to figure out what we're doing.''

Hart and Canyon are trying to determine a starter at goalkeeper and are planning to go with rotations for now. Brian Beall and Justin Quiroz are in the rotation at Canyon, and Jose Esquivel and Kyle <noinclude></noinclude>
