BOYS' SOCCER: UNBEATEN, UNNOTICED QUARTZ HILL TEAM DESERVES BETTER.Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer An undefeated regular season brought notice to the Quartz Hill boys' soccer team. Now the Rebels want respect. Despite being ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section poll the past four weeks, Quartz Hill was given the second seed in Division I when the playoff brackets were announced Monday. ``I think it's definitely a respect issue,'' goalkeeper Ian McClung said. ``That proves it right there. We don't lose a game and we still get dropped.'' Quartz Hill moved up from Division II this year because of an enrollment increase. Quartz Hill has no history in Division I, hasn't played many high-caliber teams and comes from a weak league (Golden). The other side is that the Rebels are 24-0-1 and have outscored opponents 114-18. Alta Loma (22-0-3) received the first seed. The Rebels start with Alhambra in the first round on Friday. Quartz Hill could see a team it already has faced, Oxnard, in the second round. The Rebels beat Oxnard 2-0 at the Royal tournament in early January. ``I think (the seeding) is just going to make my team a little more hungry,'' Quartz Hill coach Andre Matalon said. ``I've lost three times in my two years as head coach. I think I know how to coach and that we'll be OK. My kids hate to lose.'' No area team received a top seed in the five divisions. St. Francis, defending Division IV champion, was seeded second behind Bonita Bonita (Spanish and Portuguese for "beautiful") is the name of:
``I'm happy with a second seed,'' St. Francis coach Glen Appels said. ``But the playoffs are full of tough teams in our division, so it doesn't give us much of a break.''
