BOYS' SOCCER: SYLMAR STOPS SAN FERNANDO LAZCANO'S PENALTY KICK HELPS SPARTANS GET THEIR REVENGE SYLMAR 4, SAN FERN. 1.

Byline: Julio Cortez Staff Writer

Sylmar's Jose Lazcano felt good about this one.

In fact, he felt so good that minutes before Thursday's match against the San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

boys' soccer team, he asked coach Emanuel Martins for a chance should the opportunity arrive.

And when it did, Lazcano's shot ended up in the left side of the net for the Spartans, who scored three unanswered goals en route to a 4-1 victory over the Tigers in a Valley Mission League match at Sylmar.

``The whole team kind of went through a penalty-kick slump the last couple of weeks,'' Martins said. ``When we lost to Monroe (on Monday), we missed two penalty kicks. Basically, now whoever feels ready gets the chance to shoot a PK. He told me he was ready so he got the chance.''

The victory, which avenges a 2-0 loss to the San Fernando earlier in the season, puts the Spartans (18-5-3, 5-3) in contention for the league title after being sidetracked by consecutive losses to Van Nuys and Monroe of North Hills. On Monday, Sylmar travels to Reseda, which beat Monroe 3-0 on Thursday to improve to 5-2-1 and stay a point in front of Sylmar in the standings. Sylmar closes out the season against Van Nuys at home on Thursday.

``This was a very important game for us,'' Martins said. ``Especially because San Fernando was above us in the standings. As far as being surprised by the outcome of the game, I am not. In our previous losses, we made many mistakes.''

San Fernando took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when Erick Ramirez's shot was deflected de·flect

``We played more aggressive today,'' said Ramirez, who later blocked one other attempt by Becerra as Sylmar took a 2-1 halftime lead. ``I would much rather have the blocks than have scored on the goal. Today I got lucky and I got to score.''
