BOYS' SOCCER: S.F. DEFENDS TITLE - WITH A LITTLE HELP SAN FERNANDO 1, RESEDA 0.

needed more than a win to defend its Valley Mission League boys' soccer title. The Tigers needed a miracle.

They got both.

San Fernando beat Reseda 1-0 Thursday in the final game of the regular season and found out that Kennedy of Granada Hills was forced to forfeit To lose to another person or to the state some privilege, right, or property due to the commission of an error, an offense, or a crime, a breach of contract, or a neglect of duty; to subject property to confiscation; or to become liable for the payment of a penalty, as the result of a  its tie with San Fernando for using an ineligible in·el·i·gi·ble

Humberto Hernandez scored on a penalty kick about 30 minutes into the game and San Fernando held the host Regents to few chances.

``We did what we had to do, no matter how low (the score) would have to be,'' first-year San Fernando coach Francis Melendez said. ``We defended our championship when nobody thought we would.''

Reseda's leading scorer, Willie Sims Willie Sims (born January 18, 1984 in Guatemala City) is a Guatemalan-born soccer player, who currently plays forward for the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. He was drafted in the 2nd round (23rd overall) of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. , wasn't a factor for much of the game because of a strained groin and two defenders on him at all times. He did have the Regents' best scoring opportunity with about five minutes remaining, breaking through the San Fernando defense for an open look at the net from eight feet.

But San Fernando defender Danny Manzo dived into the frame and blocked a sure goal.

``That was a great save,'' San Fernando midfielder Miguel Sanchez said. ``It was as big a contribution as scoring a goal.''

Reseda (13-7-2, 5-3-2), which would have won the league title with a victory, dropped to third place.

``They call a ticky-tack foul on (Andrew Kironde to set up the penalty kick),'' Reseda coach Julio Castillo said. ``We had like 10 of those calls that weren't made. But that's what soccer is like. We're not going to let this get us down. Everyone starts from scratch for playoffs.''

Sylmar (19-5-4, 6-3-1) was the heavy league favorite after a successful preseason. San Fernando (9-4-3, 6-2-2) played just six nonleague games because some of its players weren't yet academically eligible.

Kennedy, already the last-place team in the league, was forced to forfeit four games for using a player who had participated in an outside league, which is against CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF).  rules. No evidence of multiple violations by Manzo or Sanchez was submitted.

But Manzo and Sanchez said they knew a Kennedy player, Manny Manny may refer to:

``If it weren't for Sylmar's protest,'' Melendez said, ``we wouldn't be where we are today.''
