Victor Astrada made key stops to maintain the lead.

After the game, Birmingham coach E.B. Mahda made everyone on his team except for Astrada run laps because of the poor second-half performance.

``We played outstanding in the first half,'' Mahda said. ``If we play like we did in the first half, we can beat anybody.''

The Patriots (7-1-1, 1-0-1) are off to a promising start, tying No. 1 Chatsworth in the first league game and beating El Camino Real for the first time in three years. ``Everyone wants to beat El Camino, and we did it today,'' Astrada said.

El Camino Real (8-3-3, 0-2), which has won two of the past three City Section titles, is left wondering what happened after going through the preleague season in its usual fashion.

El Camino Real used to coast to the league title but won it with two losses last season. The Conquistadores might need to win eight in a row to repeat, which seems unlikely in a league with four competitive teams.

``El Camino doesn't have that one standout player anymore,'' Mahda said. ``They used to be the only team in the league with club players. But now we all encourage our players to play club so they all have that year-round experience.''
