BOYS' SOCCER: BIRMINGHAM WINS IT THIS TIME : BIRM. 3 GRANT 1.

Byline: Brian Dalziel Daily News Staff Writer

Birmingham boys' soccer coach Jose Freire remembers what happened the last time his squad faced Grant in the playoffs: a 1-0 loss three years ago.

It was almost deja vu See DjVu.  Friday for the Patriots.

In the opening round of the City Championships, eighth-seeded Birmingham rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit against No. 25 Grant, then proceeded to beat the visiting Lancers lanc·er

``In the second half I said to myself that it was going to be another one just like three years ago,'' said Freire, whose team faces either Granada Hills or Roosevelt at home Wednesday.

``They had a psychological advantage coming in because they know they beat us three years ago. It was a tough game.''

Grant (8-7-8) scored 11 minutes in when senior defender Juan Herrera converted on the Lancers' first shot of the game. Birmingham (10-1-4) dominated the rest of the match, outshooting a scrappy scrap·py 1

Yet the Patriots weren't able to produce - until junior Mike Erush came along.

With Cordova on the ground and despite a tough angle, Erush slipped the ball through with six minutes left in regulation to tie the game 1-1.

Grant coach Frank Ortiz felt an interference foul should have been called on the play.

``Our goalie had to come out,'' he said. ``As soon as he leaves his feet he got touched. He didn't get touched; he was charged. That was a critical non-call. Our keeper gets charged and they got away with it.''

The teams remained tied after 30 minutes of overtime and went to penalty kicks.

``In this type of game, you take it any way you can,'' Freire said. ``We were lucky enough to win this time. We haven't been scoring too many goals. They want to dribble all the way in.

``We have a very good defense and that's going to help in the playoffs. The games are going to be close.''
