Player of the Year

BRETT KANDA

SR., Flintridge Prep

The UNLV-bound Kanda turned in one of the best high school seasons in area history. He won all but four of his outings and was 12 under par for the year.

Kanda won the CIF/SCGA (Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, ) championship at 6-under-par 66. The four-year starter won a second consecutive Prep League title, reached the Southern Section final for a third time and shot 9 under par in four postseason matches.

He also tied for sixth in the state tournament at Poppy Hills Golf Course The Poppy Hills Golf Course is a golf course in Pebble Beach, California, on the Monterey Peninsula just outside of Monterey, California. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and it opened in 1986.  in Pebble Beach, where he birdied his final two holes to make the All-State team

SCOTT WOOD

Harvard-Westlake

In his second year coaching at Harvard-Westlake, Wood guided the Wolverines to the Mission League title, a second consecutive Northern Regional team championship and to the Southern Section final for the second year in a row, where they finished ninth.

``I may be setting the bar too high,'' joked Wood, who received high grades from team captain Jon Krane for his mental preparation of the golfers.

Harvard-Westlake lost only to section finalists Hart of Newhall and San Marcos San Marcos (săn mär`kəs).

No area golfer accomplished more with less local knowledge. Amira, a former Florida state high school finalist, transferred to Valencia in November and played all season on courses he had not seen before this year.

Amira's accomplishments included a second-place 67 in the Southern Section final - best finish ever by a Valencia golfer - and an eight-birdie effort in a 71 in the CIF/SCGA championship, where he missed a state-berth playoff by three shots.

DANNY DANNY Daniel  HOFFENBERG

Sr., Royal

One one of the area's shortest hitters, the Fresno State-bound CIF/SCGA qualifier added length this year to a stellar short game. He had eight rounds in the 60s, won a second consecutive Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. JAMES DALTHORP III

Jr., Oaks Christian

Dalthorp came within a stroke of a playoff for the state tournament in his final high school match. ERIK JARVEY

Sr., Highland

The Loyola Marymount-bound Golden League MVP and three-year All-Area golfer capped his career with his third appearance in the Southern Section individual final. He also led Highland to a fourth consecutive league title.

DAVID LIPSKY David Lipsky (born 20 July 1965 in New York City) is a novelist, journalist, and short story writer. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1983 and Brown University in 1987, and holds an M.A. in Creative Writing from Johns Hopkins University.  

Jr., La Canada

A late-season bout with the flu caused Lipsky to withdraw from the state-qualifying CIF/SCGA championship, but when healthy he was outstanding. He won a second consecutive Rio Hondo League individual title, led the Spartans to a share of the league team title and was 1 under par in two postseason matches.

JON KRANE

Sr., Harv.-Westlake

Krane will attempt to make the Michigan golf team as a walk-on next season, and Harvard-Westlake head coach Scott Wood likes his chances after Krane won the Mission League individual title and led the Daily News' top-ranked team to a league team title and second consecutive berth in the Southern Section team final.

NICK GEYER

Sr., Viewpoint

New Mexico-bound Geyer was outscored by Daily News Player of the Year Brett Kanda in the Prep League. He rebounded by qualifying for his first Southern Section and CIF/SCGA finals, won a State Amateur qualifier with a 68, won the Ventura City Championship at 65-69 and came within a stroke of qualifying for the SCGA SCGA Southern California Golf Association

ANDREW OK

Sr., Granada Hills

One of two Granada Hills golfers to win a City Section individual title (with three-time champion Darren Angel), Arkansas-bound Ok came within two strokes of a playoff in his City title defense, then came within three shots of a playoff for a state berth with a 1-under-par 71 in the CIF/SCGA championship.

BEN FOX

Sr., Oakwood

Fox, who has a golf scholarship from Arizona, reached his third Southern Section final despite Oakwood of North Hollywood not having a golf team. He got there by shooting 65 to win a third consecutive section individual qualifier, then rallying to shoot 5 under par in his final four holes to get the last non-playoff berth in his postseason opener.

TREVOR JAMES

Sr., Oak Park

Two rounds in the 60s spiced a third consecutive All-Tri-Valley League season by the Eagles' captain and returning league MVP. James, who will play for College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  next year, also led a young team to a league title and reached the Southern Section individual final.
