BOYS' GOLF: ROYAL SEEKING STATE CROWNS HOFFENBERG, KATZ HAVE SELVES, TEAM IN CONTENTION.

It's been 29 years since a team from the Southern Section has won a state boys' golf championship.

In today's California Golf Association State Championship tournament at the Poppy Hills Golf Course The Poppy Hills Golf Course is a golf course in Pebble Beach, California, on the Monterey Peninsula just outside of Monterey, California. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and it opened in 1986.  in Pebble Beach, the Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  golfers can win the prestigious team and individual titles.

Anchoring the Highlanders will be San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  State-bound Matt Hoffenberg, who qualified as an individual when he tied for second place with a blazing score of 4-under 68 at the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Golf Association championship in Murrieta.

 qualifier in Beaumont, along with teammates Paul Misko, Kyle Holden, Shane Blanchard and Matt Minae, who will all be depended on if they are going to win the team title.

The Highlanders advanced as a team when they tied for first place with Clovis West but lost on a sixth-golfer tiebreaker tie·break·er

 at Thursday's SCGA tournament in Murrieta. They also won the Southern Section Northern Divisional team title when they beat Mission League winner Harvard-Westlake of Studio City and Tri-Valley League winner Oaks Christian of Westlake Village on April 20.

The last Southern Section team to win the title was Thousand Oaks in 1978.

Newcomer Ramsey Sahyoun of Campbell Hall of North Hollywood is also representing the area.

The 15-year-old freshman carded a 3-under 69 and birdied the second playoff hole at the SCGA to secure one of six individual berths from Southern California for today's event.
