BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY: CYBULSKI'S WIN QUIETS CRITICS BUT HIS ROYAL TEAM TAKES 2ND.

FRESNO -- It's hard to believe one of the most accomplished distance runners in area history could enter a race still having something to prove, but there stood a stone-faced Michael Cybulski.

It was minutes before the Royal High of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  standout was scheduled to compete in the Div.I state boys' cross country finals, and Cybulski -- the two-time defending state 3,200-meter track champion -- faced the harsh reality Harsh Reality are a little-known, proto-prog band born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire out of the remnants of the Freightliner Blues Band (formerly the Revolution) in the early sixties.  of finishing his career without a state individual title in cross country.

``I wanted to come out today and shut those people up. Hopefully, this race did that.

``It was kind of funny because I got the feeling that Sullivan and (Bonita Bonita (Spanish and Portuguese for "beautiful") is the name of:

``I haven't run that hard to finish a race since, I think, my sophomore year.''

Cybulski won despite becoming nauseous nauseous /nau·seous/ (naw´shus) pertaining to or producing nausea.

His clocking tied for the 10th-fastest time in state Div.I history.

But while Cybulski took the individual honors, his Highlanders were upset by Trabuco Hills in the Div.I team race.

The Highlanders, the top-ranked team in the state, had defeated No.2 Trabuco Hills twice earlier this season, but they lost valuable time as starter Danny Benson struggled after missing the past five weeks with a hip injury. Trabuco Hills (71 points, 77:55) ran the second-fastest time in course history and the best clocking among California teams.

Royal (82, 78:12) ran the fifth-fastest time in course history, but it finished two seconds off its state-title mark from last season.

Royal was looking to become only the second team to win three consecutive state Div.I titles. Hart of Newhall achieved the three-peat in 1990-92.

``Winning three in a row was the goal all season, but we came up a little short,'' Cybulski said. ``We're disappointed, of course, but we still ran a really fast time. We trained 24/7 for this race, and we ran hard today.''

Royal's starting five included Cybulski, Hudson Andrews (sixth, 15:28), Jun Reichl (11th, 15:37), Alex Routh (20th, 15:51) and Benson (44th, 16:12). Four Trabuco Hills runners finished in the top 16, while its No.5 runner placed 39th.

Highland of Palmdale junior Jeremy Acosta (15th, 15:36) was the only other local runner to finish in the top 20 in the Div.Irace.

Milken Community of LosAngeles' Adam Cunningham (16:04) placed 11th in Div.IV, while Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks' Charles Maginnis (15th, 16:23) and Oaks Christian of Westlake Village's Charlie Petrie (18th, 16:24) both placed in the top 20.

Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge (85:54) placed third in the Div.V team race, extending its state record to 10consecutive top-three finishes. Oakwood of North Hollywood's Aric Van Halen (15:58) finished fourth individually.
