BOYS' BASKETBALL PREVIEW LOBOS TO FOCUS ON POSITIVES.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

LITTLEROCK - Defending Golden League co-champion Littlerock High has won 20 games in each of the last two boys' basketball seasons under coach Ben Dale.

But for Dale, the third-year coach, achieving that level this season will be a tougher challenge without Gene Myvette and Frank Robinson

This article is about the baseball player and manager. For the Nottingham busker, see Frank Robinson (Xylophone Man).

Frank Robinson (born August 31, 1935 in Beaumont, Texas), is a Hall of Fame former Major League Baseball player.

Dale believes he can turn the loss into a gain.

``Let's get 8-12 points out of five guys,'' he said, `` and if we can do that, then what have we really lost?''

Chief concerns for the Lobos include inexperience and lack of outside shooting.

Littlerock returns just two seniors - guards Jason Smith Jason Smith is the name of:

and Darryl Edwards - and will count on its six juniors and three sophomores to develop quickly.

But Dale, who emphasized an up-tempo style and a physical pressure defense, believes the Lobos can create easy baskets on turnovers with defensive intensity.

He is hoping a tough preseason schedule that includes prestigious tournaments hosted by Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , Hart of Newhall and Ayala of Chino Chino (chē`nō), city (1990 pop. 59,682), San Bernardino co., S Calif.; founded 1887, inc. 1910. It is the business and processing center of a diversified farming (notably dairying) area.  Hills will make the Lobos more competitive when they open league play in January.

Smith, a 5-foot-11 point guard, is an excellent ballhandler and can play under pressure. He has improved his shooting skills in the offseason, Dale said.

Edwards (6-2) is the Lobos' most dangerous outside shooter.

Laqwin Mitchell, a 5-9 sophomore, will get significant playing time at point guard. He is a ``slippery'' player with excellent passing skills, according to according to

Josh Pierce, a 6-8 junior center, gives the Lobos a formidable inside presence but, at 180 pounds, Dale wants him to bulk up. Pierce has shown strong post moves and is an above-average rebounder and defender.

Sophomores Ronald Hughes (6-5) and Tim Anderson (6-3) should also contribute. Hughes is a strong rebounder, and the athletic Anderson has shown great instincts.

Juniors Mike Creel and Leandro Alejo will be relied upon for scoring off the bench.
