BOYS' BASKETBALL PREVIEW: IT'S HARVARD-WESTLAKE AGAINST CHAMINADE, THE SEQUEL'S SEQUEL.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

One win stands in the way of Harvard-Westlake and a trip to the Southern Section Division III-A boys' basketball final at the Pond in Anaheim.

That's the good news for the Wolverines.

The bad news is tonight's opponent in the semifinal at Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  High. It's Mission League rival Chaminade, which beat Harvard-Westlake twice in the regular season - the only team to do so.

``I think even beyond the playoff situation, the kids are just excited to get a third chance against a team that handled us pretty well two times this year,'' Wolverines coach Greg Hilliard said. ``We're glad for that opportunity. You don't normally get a third chance like that.''

In both losses, Harvard-Westlake managed to pull Chaminade out of its preferred half-court style to force an up-tempo game.

Unfortunately, the Wolverines didn't take advantage by shooting dreadfully from the field.

``Both nights we shot incredibly poorly, so I guess we have to attribute that to Chaminade's great defense,'' Hilliard said, sarcastically.

Indeed, if the Wolverines can shoot anywhere near what they're capable, they have a chance tonight.

That means Russell Lakey and Alex Holmes Alex Holmes (born August 22, 1981 in San Diego, California) was a National Football League tight end. Professional career

need to stretch Chaminade's defense with their outside shooting, and the Wolverines must finish in transition.

Even though Chaminade was willing to run with Harvard-Westlake in the previous meetings, the Eagles are most effective in the halfcourt when they pound the ball into Scott Borchart, then crash the boards with Borchart and J.J. Todd. When Borchart kicks the ball out, shooters Clarence Mitchell and Ryan Arceo have been effective.Borchart practiced for the first time in nearly two weeks on Thursday. He's been battling the flu and bronchitis and was barely able to play last Friday in the first round.

``He's going to play no doubt about it. This is the semifinals,'' Chaminade coach Jeff Young

``I think we'll match up well with them, they're athletic and they want to get up and down the court,'' McDonald said. ``And that's fine with us, because that's the tempo we like most.''

Crespi, under second-year coach Dick Dornan, has never played in the semifinals.

``This is a special opportunity, it just doesn't happen very often,'' Dornan said. ``Our guys are looking forward to taking the next step in the process, and hopefully reaching the final.''
