Byline: Daily News

Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks didn't need a last-second shot to defeat La Canada as it did in the teams' first meeting, knocking off the Spartans 58-47 in a Southern Section Division III-AA boys' basketball quarterfinal Tuesday night.

This time, however, the Knights (23-6) needed to overcome a 13-point first quarter deficit to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 1993.

The Knights were behind 39-33 in the final minute of the third quarter before rallying to take its first lead, 42-40, on a three-point play by Cody Pearson (19 points and 10 rebounds) with 6:27 remaining.

Pearson's basket helped sparked a 14-2 run that gave Notre Dame a 50-43 lead with 2:27 left. La Canada closed to within 50-45 on a 3-point basket by Robbie Neyland but Notre Dame sealed the victory with the next eight points, six on free throws.

Highland ran roughshod over visiting Arroyo Grande.

Highland (14-13) fielded just six players on Friday in a 65-63 upset over Jordan of Long Beach, the No. 8 seed, because the team bus broke down on the way to the game.

Arroyo Grande (25-3), which was seeded fifth, featured 6-foot-11 Philip Johnson See Phillip Johnson for others with a similar name

and 6-10 Ryan Zimmerman. Highland's tallest player is 6-4 Idel Dawson.

``To come into a game against a team that tall is very intimidating,'' Highland coach Jeff Smith said.

Smith told his players before the game that he believed his team's heart could overcome their opponents' size. The Bulldogs apparently bought into their coach's theory.

Gabe Stevenson scored 15 of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter, when Highland used a 14-2 run to open up a 23-10 lead.

The Bulldogs led 33-25 at the intermission, but Arroyo Grande used an 8-2 run to close to within 35-33 early in the third quarter.(EP Highland took a 45-38 lead into the fourth quarter, and held Arroyo Grande to just one point for the first nearly seven minutes into the final stanza.

Dawson had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Mike Stevenson (Gabe's brother) had 10 points, and Antoine Jones had four points and 10 rebounds.
