BOYS' BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: WILLKOMM HAS 'REALLY BAD TIMING' WITH INJURY.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

There is never a good time to get hurt, just some times that are better than others.

For Saugus center B.J. Willkomm, the right high-ankle sprain sprain, stretching or wrenching of the ligaments and tendons of a joint, often with rupture of the tissues but without dislocation. Sprains occur most commonly at the ankle, knee, or wrist joints, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the involved joint.  he suffered just over a week ago clearly is one of those instances that fall in the ``worst possible time'' category.

``Just really, really bad timing,'' Willkomm said.

The injury has sidelined Willkomm for two of the Centurions' past three games - including last Tuesday's Foothill League-showdown loss to Hart. Willkomm returned Friday against Canyon, but it was clear he was not near 100 percent.

Canyon took advantage for a 67-54 victory, its third in a row.

``He started out really dominant,'' Canyon coach Chad Phillips said. ``But it wasn't long before you could tell he was clearly not all the way back.''

That showed in a few trips up and down the floor.

 up pretty bad on me.''

Saugus is 1-2 with Willkomm sidelined. The two losses were to league rivals Hart and Canyon, which pushes the Centurions (17-7, 3-2) to third place.

Fortunately for Saugus, it doesn't play again until Friday against Burroughs, giving Willkomm a full week to rehabilitate re·ha·bil·i·tate

``At this point I'm hoping I can get to 90 percent,'' Willkomm said. ``We'll see.''

won six in a row at one point, but this run is more important.

Of the three victories, two were against Foothill League rivals Saugus and Valencia. The Saugus victory, 67-54 on Friday, was particularly impressive because it was on the road.

``We knew it was a huge game for us going in, and we definitely played like it,'' Phillips said.

The Cowboys (14-7, 3-2) are in second place and finally have their entire roster intact. The last ingredient was 6-foot-5 center Nate Longshore Nate Longshore (born June 30, 1986 in Canyon Country, California, U.S.) is an American football quarterback for the California Golden Bears.  is a physical presence in the post to line up alongside 6-5 forwards Kris Rincon and MacGregor Waite.

``He is really important to what we do,'' Phillips said. ``He isn't going to score a whole lot, but he adds so many intangibles, and when he's in there we can go 6-5 across the line, and not a lot of people can do that.''
