BOYS' BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: STRONG FINISH HAS CRESPI LOOKING TO THE FUTURE.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

After starting the summer by losing nine of its first 12 games, it would have been understandable if the Crespi of Encino basketball team just took the rest of the summer off.

Instead, the Celts The following pages provide lists of nations or people of Celtic origin, arranged by branch of Celtic ethnicity or language grouping:

at one point - to even their record at 12-12.

``It's been a complete turnaround,'' Crespi coach Dick Dornan said. ``And I could not be more proud of a team than I am with this one. These guys have made it a pleasure to coach them. I've been here seven years, and this is by far the most rewarding summer I've experienced.''

The main source of Dornan's pride is a talented group of underclassmen who are showing signs of returning Crespi to an elite level in the powerful Mission League. It might not happen this year - heavyweight Harvard-Westlake of Studio City is leading the pack along with Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and Chaminade of West Hills - but even a fourth-place finish this year will be noteworthy and set the stage for a giant step forward next season.

``Not that we aren't focused on winning this year, because we don't want to be waiting for something to happen in the future when we can make something happen in the present,'' Dornan said. ``But clearly we don't have as much pressure on us this year, so we can just play free and easy. The pressure will come next year when these guys are seniors.''

Crespi has 11 juniors and one sophomore on its roster, and they've all shown dramatic improvement this summer after the slow start. Among the highlights: A victory over talented Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and a close loss to Burroughs of Burbank in the championship game of the Crespi tournament.

,'' Dornan said. ``We definitely have something to build on.''

Dornan is especially impressed with sophomore shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.  Cornorris Atkins, junior point guard Tony Holmes and 6-foot-2 center Kevin Brooks Kevin Brooks may refer to:

--Tough summer: In all of Mike Prewitt's years of coaching, he's never seen a summer like this one when it comes to injuries.

``The toughest summer of coaching I've ever experienced,'' the Camarillo coach said.

The Scorpions have lost 6-foot-7 forward Eric Smith Notable people named Eric Smith have included:
  • Eric Smith (UK politician) (1908–1951), British Conservative politician, MP 1950–1951
  • Eric Smith (artist) (born 1919), Australian artist
and Reed Whittington to leg injuries and Ryan Riedmiller to a back injury, setting an already inexperienced Camarillo team back even further.

On the other hand, the injuries have given some other players a chance to play more than they would have, and a few have taken advantage.
