BOYS' BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: SAUGUS SHOWS SIGNS OF BIG THINGS.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Jeff Hallman has been around high school basketball long enough to know the summer months aren't exactly the time to start ordering league-championship rings.

But even Hallman admits his Saugus High Centurions are looking every bit the part of a team that will contend for the Foothill League title this season.

The Centurions are 6-2 this summer, and though records can be deceiving this time of year, Hallman gets the feeling Saugus will carry this success into next winter.

It helps Hallman returns four key players from last year - center B.J. Willkomm, forward Sam Hein and scorers Shant Bicakci and Neil Diorio.

It also helps that only Willkomm is a senior. In fact, Saugus will have 10 underclassman on its stocked roster this year, meaning the future is not only bright right now but for the next two years.

``High school basketball is so unpredictable, so it's hard sometimes to pick favorites Another term for bookmarks, which was popularized by Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. Willkomm is the key. The big center is entering his fourth year on the varsity team In the United States and Canada and UK, varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, or high school or other secondary school. Such teams compete against the principal athletic teams at other colleges/universities, or in the case of , and he continues to show improvement. Although he's missed three games this summer, he is the Centurions' anchor.

``He'll be our horse inside,'' Hallman said. ``He's a guy that's gotten better and better, which is something we've expected from him.''

Hein also has shown improvement, as has Diorio, who is expected to add different layers to his game.

Add it all up and you have a diverse team with strengths inside and outside. The Centurions also have athletic ability and speed.

``I'm excited about what we can accomplish,'' Hallman said. ``It will be an interesting year.''
