BOYS' BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: LOBOS HOPE HARD WORK BREEDS SUCCESS LITTLEROCK COACH DALE LIKES TEAM'S INTENSITY.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Littlerock High basketball coach Ben Dale has had more talented teams than his current group of Lobos. A few had the star power this team lacks and some were deeper and more experienced.

But none worked as hard and Dale is confident the Lobos' willingness to put in extra time to develop their games will help offset anything they lack compared to past Littlerock clubs.

``They show up every day excited to practice and play,'' Dale said. ``These guys want to get better and that shows in how they go about their business.''

It helps that Littlerock's best player, Tim Anderson Tim Anderson may be:
  • Tim Anderson (Zork), game programmer
  • Tim Anderson, Australian criminal defendant in Sydney Hilton bombing, academic and activist
  • Tim Anderson (defensive back), American football player
, is also the hardest worker. When the top guy is ahead of the pack in all the running drills, it forces the rest of the guys to fall in line.

``The whole team works hard, but Tim is a special kid,'' Dale said. ``He's just a quiet kid who comes to practice every day ready to go. Whether it's on the floor or in the weight room, he goes all out.''

A good example is a common drill teams run in which a player gets the ball in the low post, does a drop step, attempts a layup Layup

, and then repeats the drill on the other side of the key. While most players go through the motions, Anderson Anderson, river, Canada

``He gets the ball, drop step, lay it in then jump up and touch the box on the backboard backĀ·board

looks forward to a few days of nothing but basketball and it helps that Santa Barbara offers a nice setting.

At least it's better than Palm Springs, where Hart has camped the past few summers only to be held hostage hostage, person held by another as a guarantee that certain actions or promises will or will not be carried out. During periods of internal turmoil, insurgents often seize hostages; recent examples include seizures of Americans and other foreigners by militants in  by the oppressive heat.

``We spent the whole time in our rooms, at the gym or at a restaurant,'' Kelly said. ``It was too hot to do anything else.''

The cool Santa Barbara temperature will be a relief.

``It'll give us a chance to do something together as a team, away from basketball,'' Kelly said. ``It's going to be a nice way to end the summer.''

--Good Spirits: Paraclete finishes its summer season this week with games tonight and Thursday. Unlike teams that drag at the end of the summer, the Spirits seem fresh and enthusiastic.

``We've been somewhat short-handed at various times with guys missing practices and games, so the majority of guys are still excited about playing and practicing,'' Spirits' coach J.R. Chapman said.

Despite playing without its full roster most nights, Paraclete is 12-2 heading into tonight's game. Chapman is pleased with the record, but he's more satisfied with the overall improvement the Spirits have shown as a team and individuals.

``We've shown a lot of growth, guys are learning to depend on each other and learning what's it's all about to play varsity basketball.''

Paraclete's top player has been point guard Phil Vargas. Also, sophomore point guard Marquese Chapman appears to have earned a spot on the varsity.

``We have more talent here than in year's past and it's always exciting to work with kids who have potential,'' Chapman said. ``Right now we're trying to get them to concentrate on implementing their individual skills into the team concept. It's coming along well.''

: Littlerock is not usually known for outside shooting.

``We mostly get a lot of athletes,'' Lobos coach Dale said.

That will change this year with the addition of shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.  Delavar McKee, who is lighting it up from distance this summer.

``We'll shoot like 300 3s in practice and he'll hit 53 percent, 55 percent. He's always over 50 percent,'' Dale said. ``We've never had a guy who can shoot it like him.''

McKee will make teams think twice about zoning up on the Lobos as they normally do.

``Now we have a guy who can make them pay,'' Dale said. ``It's funny because we'll play preseason games and we'll see man-to-man defenses Man to man defense is a type of defensive tactic used in basketball and Football (Soccer) in which each player is assigned to defend and follow the movements of a single player on offense. Often, a player guards his counterpart (e.g. , but the minute we get to Golden League play, all we see is zone, so Delavar will help.''
