HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS

TONIGHT, 7:30

SOUTHERN SECTION DIV. I-AA

FIRST ROUND

VALENCIA (20-6) at GLENDALE (12-14)

Outlook: Valencia, two victories shy of a school single-season record, could have an easy time against a sub-.500 opponent, but nothing will be taken for granted Adj. 1. taken for granted - evident without proof or argument; "an axiomatic truth"; "we hold these truths to be self-evident"
axiomatic, self-evident

obvious - easily perceived by the senses or grasped by the mind; "obvious errors"
after the Vikings finished the regular season with two successive losses to fall out of contention for a league title.

Leading scorer Teddy Goetz (16.0 points) looks to extend his basketball career before heading to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
on a volleyball scholarship. Valencia's other top players are 6-foot-11 Kevin Delange and 6-8 1/2 Donjay Kakonde, two of the tallest players in school history.

SOUTHERN SECTION DIV. I-A

FIRST ROUND

RIGHETTI of Santa Maria (9-15) at CANYON (18-8)

Outlook: Foothill League champion Canyon is a hot team, with wins in its past four games and nine of its past 11. Depth has much to do with the Cowboys' success: Five players - Kris Rincon, Bryan Lewis, Ryan Kuhn, Luke Guidroz and Casey Floyd - have scored 22 points or more in a game this season.

HART (14-13) at VENTURA (18-8)

Outlook: Hart, which reached the section final last year, looks to ride momentum from Wednesday's victory in a wild-card game at Santa Maria, but it won't be easy. Third-seeded Ventura has won seven of its past eight, including a 47-44 nonleague victory Jan. 24 over Hart.

``Ventura is loaded,'' Hart coach Tom Kelly said. ``It will take a near-perfect game to beat them, and that's just being honest.''

SOUTHERN SECTION DIV. V-AA

SECOND ROUND

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  CHRISTIAN (15-8) at HESPERIA CHRISTIAN (19-6)

Outlook: Santa Clarita Christian's reward for Wednesday's playoff victory over Newbury Park Adventist is a game at top-seeded Hesperia Christian, which has 13 of its past 14 and 10 in a row.
