BOYS' BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: BIRMINGHAM ON RIGHT TRACK.

With a new coach and a new team attitude, it's a new era for the Birmingham High of Lake Balboa boys' basketball team, and the Patriots are eager to move on after going 4-18 in 2006-07, including five consecutive losses to finish the season.

Jarvis Turner, a former USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  player who has coached the high-powered Harvard-Westlake of Studio City freshman team the past four years, has stepped in for Andre McCarter, and Turner has vowed improvement.

So far, so good at the annual Campbell Hall Campbell Hall can refer to:
  • a residence hall at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)
  • Campbell Hall School in North Hollywood, California
 High Mid-Summer Classic in North Hollywood.

Birmingham won its second game in two days Tuesday with a 43-40 victory over Horizon of San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. , one of California's most consistently successful programs.

"It's been rough, but this is the year of the comeback," guard Alex Strauther said.

Turner's friends said he was crazy to leave a prestigious program like Harvard Westlake, but he couldn't turn down an opportunity to be a varsity coach, and he's ready to roll up his sleeves.

"It's definitely going to be a challenge, but that's what I wanted. I'm looking forward to it," said Turner, 28. "Probably the biggest change is just trying to create a basketball culture. That starts by playing year round, and here we are."

Coach Terry Kelly is trying his best to keep things in perspective.

"It's going to be a fun game," Kelly said. "We're trying to play the best like we've done all summer, but it's summer league, and that's all it is. Nothing more."

"I think we have only have twoplayers (Niko Veatch and Charles Maginnis) who've played significant minutes, so we're very young," coach Bill Bedgood said. "But we'll be competitive. This summer, we've been winning one, then losing one."

Moving on: Three Notre Dame graduates will play college basketball as freshman this season: Pierce Brooks (San Francisco State), Aaron Fisher (Cal Lutheran) and Jose Garcia (Glendale College).
