BOYS' BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: `GAME-BY-GAME' WORKS FOR VALENCIA.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

long after the final buzzer and affect the rest of the season.

But Valencia boys' basketball coach Rocket Collins had no such concerns when the Vikings fell to Hart High last week.

``Not with this group of players, I didn't,'' Collins said. ``I was confident they'd put the loss behind them as quickly as possible.''

Which the Vikings did, winning their next two games. Along the way, they got some help from Saugus, which beat Hart to create a two-way tie for first place in the Foothill League between Valencia (16-4, 4-1) and Hart (17-4, 4-1).

take care of our own business and not worry about what anyone else is doing,'' Collins said. ``For us, it's just taking things on a game-by-game basis. That's all you can do.''

--Drained: Hart's boys' basketball team lost to Saugus three days after its victory over Valencia. The setback wasn't predictable, but it also wasn't surprising.

After playing such an emotional game just a few days before playing a road game against a team that desperately needed a win, the Indians just didn't have enough energy to beat Saugus.

``We were spent,'' Hart coach Tom Kelly People named Tom Kelly include:

  • Tom Kelly (basketball) (born 1924), played in 27 games for the Boston Celtics in the 1948-49 NBA season.
said. ``And that's not taking anything away from Saugus. They played harder than us and better than us, and they deserved the win. We didn't lose as much as they won.''

On the bright side, Hart played one of its worst games of the year - guard Mike Gentry scored just three points - and Saugus probably played its best, yet the Indians were in the game.

``That's something we can use as a learning tool,'' Kelly said. ``We know it's something we can't let happen again.''
