The Bulldogs, who stumbled into the postseason only to upset Long Beach-Jordan and Arroyo Grande, committed 38 turnovers and lost to fourth-seeded Ontario 83-49 in the Southern Section Division I-AAA semifinals Friday night at Highland.

Highland entered the playoffs having lost three of its last four regular-season games and had a losing overall record.

``Their defense was just great, and they have awesome shooters,'' Highland forward Ramson ram·son

), as well as forward Idel Dawson.

Ontario's ability to contain that trio was a key in its victory. Mike Stevenson had 22 points and Dawson had 12 (and nine rebounds) but Gabe Stevenson was held to six.

``They have really good guards, they're the type of team that wins championships,'' Ontario coach Jerry De Fabiis said. ``I told (our team) we've got to contain them.''

Ontario (23-4) opened the game with a 9-2 run and led 34-14 midway Midway, island group (2 sq mi/5.2 sq km), central Pacific, c.1,150 mi (1,850 km) NW of Honolulu, comprising Sand and Eastern islands with the surrounding atoll. That's when Highland finally staged its first meaningful rally, outscoring Ontario 11-4 to go into the intermission trailing 38-25.

The highlight of the night for Highland was an alley-hoop pass from Gabe Stevenson to Mike Stevenson with 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter, which he converted with a thunderous thun·der·ous

dunk that got the crowd excited and closed the Bulldogs to within 16-9.

However, the Jaguars' relentless full-court pressure, which caused 18 first-half turnovers, bothered Highland even more in the second half: The Bulldogs committed 20 turnovers after the break - 12 in the third quarter, when Ontario opened a 58-32 lead, its largest of the game.

The Bulldogs scored the last five points in the third quarter to close to within 58-37 but never closed the lead to fewer than 19 in the fourth quarter.

``It was good while it lasted,'' Younan said of his team's run.

``Top eight (in the section). . . . I mean nobody expected us to do that.''
