ALEX STEPHESON Alex Stepheson is an American basketball player at the University of North Carolina. Grabbed 20 or more rebounds in 16 games as a senior at Harvard-Westlake High School in North Hollywood • Fourth-team Parade All-America selection • Averaged 20.4 points and 17.

``Alex is a tremendous talent,'' Wolverines coach Greg Hilliard said. ``He does so many things well on both ends of the floor. He's one of the best we've had here.''

Stepheson is at his best with his back to the basket in the low block and is talented enough to put the ball on the floor with a one-bounce dribble to split a double team, freeing up space for an improving midrange jump shot or a kickout pass to an open teammate. His quick first step and explosive athleticism enables him to contest shots others couldn't get to.

Stepheson posted double-doubles in 30 of 34 games and had 20 or more points and rebounds in 13 outings - four in a row at one stretch - and blocked at least seven shots on eight occasions.

``Alex is gifted. He's a natural,'' said prep basketball guru Sonny Vaccaro John "Sonny" Vaccaro (born 1940) is a former marketing executive for sneaker companies, including Nike, Inc., Reebok and Adidas. [1]

The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games .

Thousand Oaks went 27-6 record, tying the school record for victories, which would have fallen if not for two buzzer-beater defeats.

Newcomer of the Year

RYAN WHITE Ryan Wayne White (December 6, 1971 – April 8, 1990[1]) was a young man with AIDS from Kokomo, Indiana who became a national spokesman for AIDS, after being expelled from school because of his infection.

Granada Hills, Junior Guard

The 5-foot-9 transfer from Texas made an immediate impact, averaging team highs in nearly every significant offensive category - 22.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.6 steals - as the unfancied Highlanders reached the City Section Championship tournament.

First Team

LARRY DREW Larry Donnell Drew (born April 2 1958 in Kansas City, Missouri) is a retired American professional basketball player who was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the 1st round (17th overall) of the 1980 NBA Draft.

Taft, Sophomore G

Drew's father, Larry Sr., played in the NBA and is an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, and he appears ready to follow in Dad's footsteps. The point guard was pivotal in Taft's march to the City Section title game and into the state playoffs, averaging 15 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals per game. Drew's mentality is pass first, shoot second. He does, however, have the ability to take over a game with one of the quickest first steps in the area and a perimeter game that continues to improve.

The 6-foot-4 shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.  posted superb numbers - 21.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.4 blocks per game - and provided outstanding performances to lead the Vikings to the Southern Section Div. IV-AA title game and into the state tournament. The 15-year old recorded a pair of triple-double during a two week span early in the season, and had a breakout effort against Montclair Prep with UCLA's Ben Howland in attendance, finishing with 35 points, including four 3-pointers, and 14 rebounds.

CALVIN HAYNES

Taft, Senior F

The Oregon State-bound Haynes has a smooth, left-handed jumper and explosive leaping ability, which he used to score a team-best 18 points for the Toreadors. In his best game of the season, he scored 27 points to keep Taft in the City Section Championship title-game, a 68-58 loss to Westchester. Hayes culminated his career by being named to the All-City first team twice and to the All-West Valley League first team three times.

JARREL SMITH

Birmingham, Senior F

The 6-foot-8 standout, headed to Colorado State, might have been the Valley's best-kept secret when the season started, but that changed in a hurry. Smith averaged 25.8 points and 11.2 rebounds - one of five area players to score more than 20 and grab more than 10 per game. He was one of the more prolific scores in the area, finishing with 30 or more points five times and 40 or more twice, highlighted by a career-high 45 against Bingham of Utah.
