BOYS' BASKETBALL DAILY NEWS ALL-AREA TEAM AND HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEASON.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

BRYCE TAYLOR Bryce Taylor is an American college basketball player at the University of Oregon. The 6'5", 205 pound junior guard is currently averaging 14.6 ppg and 5.1 rpg. High School , Harvard-Westlake, Sophomore Guard

Arrived as an impact player a year earlier than expected, using his big-game capabilities to lead the young Wolverines of Studio City to the Southern Section Division IV-AA championship, their first title since the Jason and Jarron Collins-led glory days in the mid-'90s. Taylor, who worked all summer on getting stronger and improving his shooting touch, made it pay off by averaging 22.9 points per game for a deep, balanced team. The fact that he has two years left is a scary thought for Mission League teams.

Solidified himself as the brightest star on the horizon and will challenge for Player of the Year honors next season after averaging 29.1 points, 7.6 assists, 7.8 rebounds and 3.2 steals for the Lancers lanc·er

Showed he isn't just a football player who passes time between seasons having fun on the basketball court. Olson might just be having fun in hoops, but the guy can flat out play, averaging 14 points and leading the Lancers to an undefeated Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. SERGEI LEPIASHINSKI, Reseda, Senior Forward

Continued to improve after an impressive junior year, when he averaged 23 points per game. Lepiashinski is a rough-and-tough forward who doesn't mind battling inside the paint, and his improving outside shot and defense helped the Regents finish second in the Valley Mission League.

, Hart, Senior Forward

Unselfish player on an unselfish team. He averaged 15 points and provided rugged defense and leadership. Kase bought into the Indians' team-first philosophy, and though he could have averaged more points in another system, his sacrifices helped Hart of Newhall win the Foothill League title.

Big-game player who never backed down from taking the big shot at the critical time. Averaged 12.9 points and hit a ton of big shots. Like his teammate Olson, Anderson is a top- notch football player who also is an excellent basketball player. His forte is guts and smarts.

JEREMY HAGGERTY, Canyon, Senior Forward

Was up and down throughout the regular season but elevated his game during the playoffs, leading the Cowboys to the Southern Section Division I-A semifinals. Averaged 16.7 points per game.

Coach of the Year

GREG HILLIARD, Harvard-Westlake

Not that there was any doubt about his coaching abilities - Hilliard consistently produces smart, balanced, entertaining teams - but it was nice to see the veteran coach cash in on another championship without Jason and Jarron Collins Jarron Collins (born December 2, 1978 in Northridge, California) is a professional American basketball player for the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association.

leading the way. The Wolverines of Studio City featured nine underclassmen, including three sophomores and a freshman. But they managed to grow as a team during a difficult Mission League schedule, then peaked in the postseason, riding the overpowering talents of Bryce Taylor and the gutty leadership of Craig Weinstein to win the championship.

Biggest Surprise

Cleveland High of Reseda is building a special program under former Cavaliers star Andre Chevalier, but success was supposed to be a year or two away. Obviously, the best lies ahead for this on-the-rise team, but the Cavaliers arrived a little earlier than expected, hanging in the tough West Valley League for most of the season before bowing to Taft of Woodland Hills and qualifying for the postseason a year before most would have predicted.

Biggest Disappointment

Burbank High was considered a sleeper in the Foothill League and many rival coaches were predicting surprising success for the Cowboys. But they were never able to put it together after a fast start in preleague play, and thus spent the year looking up at Hart, Canyon, Saugus and Valencia.

Most Unusual

The Mustafa Asghari-Derrick Taylor feud at Taft of Woodland Hills that resulted in Asghari getting removed from the team, then fleeing Taft for rival Birmingham of Van Nuys, is a situation that leaves people scratching their heads. It should have never got to the point it did, considering how close Asghari and Taylor were the previous three years.

Look Ahead

Harvard-Westlake of Studio City returns its core players from a team that won the Southern Section Division IV-AA title, so expect the Wolverines to be right in the thick of things again. But Chaminade of West Hills and Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  will challenge Harvard-Westlake for the Mission League title. Watch out for Cleveland of Reseda in the West Valley League and Grant of Van Nuys in the Sunset Six.
