Kelly's teams typically go 10 deep, and with the rotation pretty much set at one through seven, the goal this summer was to find out who seven through 10 were. Not to say that a definitive answer emerged. ``From night to night, we had different guys playing well and that's not a bad thing,'' Kelly said. ``It's it's 1. Contraction of it is. 2. As for progress, the Indians were helped along by the absence of standout Adam Rich Adam Rich (born on October 12 1968) is an American actor born in Brooklyn, New York City. He is arguably best remembered for playing youngest son Nicholas Bradford on the 1970s television drama Eight is Enough , who spent most of the summer at travel camps and tournaments. Rich is a proven player, and Kelly actually welcomed the chance to play without him. ``It gave some other kids a chance to play more, which gave us an opportunity to look at some different combinations,'' Kelly said. ``I mean, we know what Adam is all about, and the experience he got this summer is going to benefit him and us, so we're OK with that. It worked out well.'' --Coming on: One of the bright spots for the Indians was the way they spread around their offense. In more than 40 games this summer, Kelly thinks one of his players scored more than 20 points just one or two times, a sign of versatility. ``There were nights when we had four guys score 17 points, and that is something I'm really pleased about, the fact that on any given night we have a number of guys who can score points,'' Kelly said. As for players who showed improvement over the course of the summer, Kelly pointed out Brandon McQueen.'' --Burroughs coming on: A team on which to keep an eye is Burroughs of Burbank, which has a number of seniors and is expected to make a run at a top-three finish this year in the Foothill League. But if you didn't see them over the summer, don't worry. That is exactly the way Burroughs coach Art Sullivan planned it. ``We purposely pur·pose·ly adv. I mean, we can always go scout them, but we'd just rather not see them right now. We'll see enough of them once the season comes around.'' --Top to bottom: If you're keeping score this summer - and nobody really is - the Foothill League shakes out like this in terms of top to bottom: Saugus, Hart, Valencia, Canyon, Burroughs, Burbank. ``It's going to be a talented league again,'' Hart's Kelly said. ``It will be another great year'' Vincent Bonsignore, (818) 713-3612 vincent.bonsignore(at)dailynews.com |
