BOYS' BASKETBALL: SURPRISE: LANCASTER WINS SHARE OF LEAGUE TITLE LANCASTER 57, HIGHLAND 56.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

LANCASTER - At the season's outset, few were giving Lancaster High much of a chance of successfully defending its Golden League title. After all, the team graduated 10 seniors who made up the nucleus of the school's first-ever league champions.

On Tuesday night, Lancaster proved everybody wrong, clinching at least a share of the league crown with a 67-66 victory over visiting Highland.

Lancaster (19-7, 7-2) can clinch the title outright with a victory over visiting Littlerock on Friday. Highland (10-9, 6-3) can win a share of the title with a road victory against Quartz Hill on Friday, combined with a Lancaster loss to the Lobos.

``Everybody thought that last year's team was going to be it, that we weren't going to be a good team anymore,'' said Lancaster center Steve Thornton, ``but we shocked everybody by coming out and dominating league once more.''

Thornton corralled a loose ball in front of the basket in the closing seconds after Stevenson had the ball stripped by a Lancaster player while he was trying to drive to the basket.

``As soon as I grabbed that, I knew that we were defending champs again,'' Thornton said. ``Highland is a great team and they gave us a scare by making those two big 3-pointers, but when I grabbed that I knew that it was over.''

Michael Webb converted a 4-point play with 2:16 remaining, snapping a 60-60 deadlock See deadly embrace.
