Byline: Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer

Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  High is the favorite in its 14th annual Simi Valley Tip-Off Classic, but the title is not a certainty.

Quality teams abound, including Grant of Van Nuys, which has 6-foot-3 shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.  Gilbert Arenas Gilbert Jay Arenas Jr. (born January 6, 1982 in Florida[0]) is an American professional basketball player currently with the NBA's Washington Wizards. Arenas overcame his modest NBA debut, including being a second-round draft pick, to establish himself as one of the most . Arenas, the top player in the Valley, has signed with Arizona.

A potential Grant-Simi Valley matchup looms in the semifinals if the teams win their early-round games as expected.

Also in the lower bracket is South Gate, Roosevelt of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  - the Pioneers' first round opponent tonight - El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:
  • There is an El Camino Real in California; see: El Camino Real (California).
, Granada Hills and Marshall of Los Angeles.

In the upper bracket is North Hollywood, Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
, San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

, Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc. , Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame , Verdugo Hills and Camarillo.

Santa Clara is the favorite in the upper bracket. The Saints have two players, Nick Jones and B.J. Ward, that have signed with UC Santa Barbara.

``There are some great teams and players in this year's tournament,'' Simi Valley coach Dean Bradshaw said. ``It's pretty much a year-round thing putting this together and we're very pleased with this year's field.''

A couple of side notes to look for: Simi Valley will be going for its fifth consecutive tournament title. The championship game is Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Santa Clara coach Lou Cvijanovich has 799 career victories. If the Saints win the tournament he will eclipse the state record of 803.

``I'd like to see him get No. 800,'' Bradshaw said, ``but I don't want him to get the record, because that would mean they would win the tournament.''

Leading the way for the host Pioneers is 6-foot-9 center Rafael Berumen. Berumen, who signed a letter of intent with New Mexico, is rated as one of the top frontcourt players in the state. He's big and bulky with a nice touch.

Other top Pioneers include: 6-foot-6 Bret Michel, Branduinn Fullove (6-foot-5), Shaun Michel (6-foot-2) and newcomer Dustin Villepigue (6-foot-8).

Some notable players to watch from other teams include: Gary Bryce (6-foot-6) and Kyle Lassiter (6-foot-5) from Camarillo, Arenas and Krishna Evans (6-foot-5) from Grant, Jason McKissick (6-foot-3) of North Hollywood, Kevin Baird (6-foot-4) of Verdugo Hills, and Chris Williams (6-foot-8) and Dante Ward (6-1) from Notre Dame.

``It doesn't make or break your season,'' Bradshaw said of the Classic, ``but it sure is nice to win it. ``It's so early that you're just trying to get better each game, but having some great competition right away helps everyone.''
