BOYS' BASKETBALL: SIMI VALLEY SHOWS SOME OF ITS MAGIC SIMI VALLEY 63, MOORPARK 62.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

MOORPARK - They don't walk with the same confident swagger anymore.

Gone of the days when the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  High boys' basketball team could stroll into a gym and scare opponents into victories just by showing up.

But that's OK with the Pioneers. They knew exactly what they were in for after losing four starters from last year.

Just because Simi Valley (12-2, 1-0) doesn't have the same fear factor it once did doesn't mean some of the old magic doesn't remain. And by the looks of things, the Pioneers will need plenty of tricks this season to stay ahead of everyone else in the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. Simi Valley's 63-62 league-opening win over Moorpark Wednesday is a good example.

Trailing the host Muskateers with less than a minute remaining, the Pioneers got the ball into the hands of a wide-open Ryan Bradshaw behind the 3-point line while Moorpark ran around trying to find someone to guard.

The Muskateers were so concerned with stopping 6-foot-9 Pioneers center Dustin Villepigue and 6-5 guard Jered Weaver Jered David Weaver (born October 4, 1982 in Northridge, California), is a Major League Baseball starting pitcher with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Bradshaw, who calmly sized things up, set his feet and let fire, making the 3-pointer to help deliver the win for Simi Valley.

If that's what it's going to take for the Pioneers, taking an advantage of an opponent's mistake to steal a win, so be it.

``I can pretty much guarantee this is what it's going to be like every night in this league,'' said Bradshaw, who scored 11 points. ``It's so balanced and competitive that we have to come out and fight every night.''

The Muskateers (9-5, 0-1) had two chances to go ahead, but Greg Estandia Greg Estandia (born November 18, 1982) is an American football tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars.  missed a six-footer with 46 seconds left, and Blake Sharpe wasn't close on a wild layup as time expired ex·pire
