SUN VALLEY -- DJ Gay has made a name for himself in recent seasons as one of the purest outside shooters in the area.

His shot fell flat Tuesday night.

The Poly High of Sun Valley boys' basketball standout is recognized for his ability to perform in the clutch.

He couldn't buy a clutch free throw this time around.

Yet Poly somehow survived an off night from the top scorer in the City Section, coming from behind by as many as six points in the fourth quarter for a 60-58 victory over visiting Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  in the City Section quarterfinals.

Gay finished with a game-high 22 points for No. 3 seed Poly (23-4), yet the point guard was just 8 of 24 from the field on the night. He missed three of four free throws in the final 30 seconds, but No. 6 Palisades (19-10) came up scoreless on its final three possessions.

"I had a an off-night tonight, but I tried to remain confident and put this team on my shoulder," Gay said. "I admit I was pretty nervous there at the end of the game. Luckily, we pulled this one out."

Mauricio Gonzalez and Andy Guerra each scored nine points for the Parrots

, who trailed 55-49 with 4:25 remaining despite leading by as many as 10 points in the first half.

Ashton Roberts scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half to put Palisades ahead, but Gay hit two consecutive 3-pointers to tie the score at 55-55 with 3:24 remaining.

Aaron Hawk-Harris made a layup with 1:43 remaining to give Palisades its final lead at 58-57.

to put Poly back on top with 1:01 remaining, and the Parrots held on despite Gay missing three of four free throws to end the game.

"DJ came up big for us there despite missing those free throws," said Poly coach Brad Katz. "It wasn't pretty for most of the night, but he's the top scorer in the City Section for a reason. He carried us."

Hawk-Harris had a game-high 17 points for Palisades, including 10 in the first quarter.

Poly will face either Westchester of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  or Jordan of Los Angeles on Thursday in the City Section semifinals.
