BOYS' BASKETBALL: NEW STYLE FACES TEST TONIGHT.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

The master plan for the Chaminade High of West Hills boys' basketball team was devised for games like tonight against Harvard-Westlake.

The Eagles, once a methodical me·thod·i·cal   also me·thod·ic

, fast-breaking team that wants to run as much as possible.

The style change was done as much for Chaminade's young, exciting talent as it was to match up against Mission League teams such as Harvard-Westlake of Studio City and Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , both of which use similar systems.

``We wanted to be able to run with those types of teams, that's why we did it,'' Cantwell said. ``We have the personnel to do it, so it fits the type of players we have.''

The Eagles (13-3, 2-0) obviously have taken a liking to the change, racing to an impressive start behind Marcus Everett, Dion Cook, Jon Todd Todd , Sir Alexander Robertus 1907-1997.

, Gerrerd Link and Adrian Aye-Darko.

They'll showcase it today against Harvard-Westlake (13-3, 2-1) in a key Mission League matchup at 7 p.m. at Harvard-Westlake.

``The kids are looking forward to playing them,'' Cantwell said. ``Obviously we made the decision to change styles to play against teams like that.''

One of the more surprising Eagles has been Todd, a 6-foot-8 center who would have fit well in Chaminade's previous style as a back-to-the-basket forward. As recently as last year, the Eagles liked to pound it inside to forwards like Scott Borchart and work inside-outside. These days, with guards Cook and Everett slashing slash·ing

to the basket, then looking to score or pass, Todd's main responsibility is rebounding and being ready to catch passes and go to the basket.

``He's really starting to figure out ways to be available and be ready to catch passes off dribble penetrations,'' Cantwell said. ``He's coming along real well.''

Harvard-Westlake also is surging after winning two games last week, including a come-from-behind victory Saturday over highly regarded Loyola. The Wolverines raced back from an 11-point deficit to win 94-87.

Bryce Taylor Bryce Taylor is an American college basketball player at the University of Oregon. The 6'5", 205 pound junior guard is currently averaging 14.6 ppg and 5.1 rpg. High School  has been one of the top players in the area, scoring 28 against Loyola and 27 Wednesday against Crespi.
