All it takes is one glance at 6-foot-7, 250-pound senior center Nick McKay to determine the focal point focal point

for the Viewpoint High boys' basketball team.

McKay is the biggest player in the Liberty League. And Viewpoint coach Derek McIntyre makes no secret about the Patriots' game plan.

``We're going to hammer away with him as much as possible,'' the second-year coach said. ``If he gets the ball inside. It's impossible to stop him. He's a load.''

As a junior, McKay averaged 11.8 points and 7.5 rebounds to earn second-team all-league honors. This season, McKay has increased his average to 19 points despite getting a late start while playing on the Viewpoint football team which advanced to the second round of the Southern Section eight-man large division playoffs.

McKay opened the season with efforts of 21, 23 and 22 points in Viewpoint's first three games against Valley Torah, Highland Hall and Oakwood. He poured in 32 in a victory over Kilpatrick in the consolation finalof the Montclair Prep tournament.

McKay, along with seniors Derek Bly and Nassir Nassirzadeh, is one of three returning starters for Viewpoint, which finished 9-12 and sixth in the Liberty League at 5-9. This season, Viewpoint is off to a 6-4 start.

The 6-2 Bly and 6-3 Matrisciano, an excellent leaper, gives Viewpoint a formidable front line with McKay. The three have dominated the boards with the Patriots going to a zone defense frequently to conserve energy with limited reserves.

McKay and Bly were selected to the all-tournament in the Providence Providence, city (1990 pop. 160,728), state capital and seat of Providence co., NE R.I., a port at the head of Providence Bay; founded by Roger Williams 1636, inc. as a city 1832.  tournament in leading the Patriots to the championship game. They were also chosen to the second team in the Montclair Prep tournament.

``If you are going to beat us, you are going to have to do it from the outside,'' McIntyre said. ``We're not going to race up and down the court, but we'll take the easy layup anytime. We're going to be selective when we run the break.''

While the Patriots may be thin on the bench, they are loaded with experience. Bly, McKay, Malkin, Nassirzadeh and Matrisciano have played together since freshmen and were coached by McIntyre on the junior varsity team For the American rock band, see .

``This year's team might not have as much pure talent as last year but we're a much better team,'' McIntyre said. ``It is a real cohesive cohesive,

Viewpoint, which has suffered 79-52 and 71-52 losses Providence this season, will have a difficult challenge when the Patriots open league play at home against the Pioneers on Jan 4.

``We are very capable and can pose some problems with our size if we play a good game and get people involved,'' McIntyre said. ``To beat them we have to catch them on a bad shooting night and attack them with a good inside game.''
