The Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks boys' basketball team had an opportunity to make a statement Friday night against perennial Mission League front-runner Harvard-Westlake of Studio City.

Unfortunately, the Knights came up short.

Actually, it wasn't even close as the Wolverines, ranked No. 3 by the Daily News, jumped out to an early lead and were relentless thereafter en route to a 64-47 victory at home.

``There was a lot of talk about how Notre Dame was going to be tough this year and a possible challenge for us,'' Harvard-Westlake senior Jabari Trotter trotter: see Standardbred horse.  said. ``But you can't sleep on Harvard-Westlake. We took it to them.''

The Knights (9-6, 0-2), ranked No. 9, had no answer for Renaldo Woolridge early on.

The 6-foot-8 junior hit a pair of 3-pointers to key an 8-0 run in the first quarter and added another one from beyond the arc to give the Wolverines a 21-11 lead at the 6:27 mark of the second quarter.

Notre Dame went scoreless over the final 3:26 of the first half and Harvard-Westlake (11-3, 2-0) went into intermission with a 31-20 advantage.

The Knights responded in the second half when Jose Garcia Jose Garcia / José García is a common name that can refer to:

followed with a layup to cut the deficit to 37-31 with 3:49 left in the third quarter.

Gaven Lucas, Marco Sisto, Jon Sebastian and Trotter each scored during an 8-2 spurt spurt Vox populi A surge or abrupt ↑ in the size or speed of a thing. See Fat spurt, Growth spurt.  as the Wolverines regained the momentum to take a 45-33 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Woolridge essentially broke the Knights' spirit in the fourth quarter by hitting another 3-pointer to give Harvard-Westlake an insurmountable 55-39 lead with 2:13 left in the game.

``We don't take any team lightly,'' said Woolridge, who scored 16 points. ``We weren't going to let up until the final buzzer.''

Trotter finished with 16 points, 12 in the second half.

Fisher had a team-high 16 points and Garcia added 13, which was key considering the Knights' leading scorer, Pierce Brooks, had an off night and finished with seven points.

Erik Swoope put an exclamation point exclamation point: see punctuation.

 ovation.

``We respect Notre Dame and we knew they were going to be excited and up for this game,'' Harvard-Westlake coach Greg Hilliard said. ``We were able to jump out to an early lead and that helped us down the stretch.''
