BOYS' BASKETBALL: HART HANGS ON BIG VALENCIA RALLY COMES UP SHORT HART 67, VALENCIA 61.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Perhaps no Foothill League boys' basketball team is going to beat favored Hart of Newhall this season. But Valencia sure gave the Indians INDIANS. The aborigines of this country are so called.

 something to think about Tuesday.

The Vikings nearly overcame a 21-point deficit, narrowing the Hart lead to six in the waning minutes. But a few missed shots and a couple of late turnovers spoiled the upset bid, and the Indians escaped with a 67-61 victory in front of a raucous rau·cous

without anyone taller than 6-foot-4, Hart had no answer for Valencia's 6-8, 250-pound Andrew Bruckner. He led all scorers with 19 points, mostly coming on uncontested layups.

Hart also had difficulty holding the lead, committing costly turnovers in the second half as Valencia made its run.

As things were, Hart took sole possession of first place with six games remaining.

``We just tried to get back in the game with our defense,'' Valencia's Alan Husted said. ``The crowd was a major factor because everything was loud.''

Cody Kase gave Hart what seemed a safe 15-point lead with five minutes remaining when he found himself alone in the open court before speeding past Bruckner for a layup.

But Valencia went on a 9-3 run over the next two minutes to pull within nine. When Hart then stretched the lead back to 13 on Navid Khajavi's fast-break layup with two minutes left, Valencia responded by scoring the next six points in 50 seconds. The Vikings had further opportunities during the final minute but missed two shots and threw the ball away.

. They can get hot and cold,'' Kase said. ``We tried to stay focused and run our plays, but they got back in it.''

Hart was able to sag in on Bruckner during the second half, holding him to four points over the final 11 minutes. No one else scored more than 10 points for Valencia.

Mike Gentry led Hart with 15 points. Adam Rich Adam Rich (born on October 12 1968) is an American actor born in Brooklyn, New York City.
