BOYS' BASKETBALL: DEPLETED TAFT DISPOSES OF SYLMAR SMITH, FARMAR, COOK DO ENOUGH TO EARN VICTORY TAFT 78, SYLMAR 67.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

It's getting lonely on the Taft High boys' basketball bench these days. The Toreadors of Woodland Hills are down to seven active players after Lance Broadus left the team this week to concentrate on school and Ian Bell Ian Bell can refer to:

It's getting so bad, Taft coach Derrick derrick: see crane.

Taylor has more assistant coaches sitting by him than reserves, a depth problem that affects just about everything he decides to do - substitutions, timeouts and play calling - as well as everything he decides not to do.

He can't employ the Toreadors' fullcourt press, and he picks and chooses when he lets the them play an up-tempo game.

In fact, about the only thing that hasn't changed is the way Taft keeps rolling up victories. On Saturday, the Toreadors picked up their third win this week with a 78-67 nonleague victory over Sylmar at jam-packed Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics

Taft (17-4) received another brilliant performance from Steve Smith (29 points, six assists) and Jordan Farmar Jordan Robert Farmar (born November 30, 1986) is an American professional basketball player at starting point guard for the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers.

He was previously the starting point guard for the UCLA men's basketball team.
(21 points, 11 assists), and got a timely shooting night from Matt Cook, who finished with 20 points and kept Taft in the game in the first half with his outside shooting.

The Toreadors' hopes to get some reserve help this week with the return of Austin Reed

``Man, it's been tough,'' said Smith, who announced this week he'll play football at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  next fall. ``You just try to pace yourself a little bit and push through it. But it definitely affects how we play.''

of Reed and Grant; the flu bug that hit Joey Street; and the injury to Drob. Taylor is getting used to the routine, and admits it's actually brought the Toreadors closer. Still, he looks forward to having a full roster.

``Right now, we've got two horses (Smith and Farmar) and a bunch of guys A Bunch of Guys (BOGs), or Group of Guys (GOGs) are terms used by counter-terrorism officials to refer to small, self-organizing terrorist cells.[1] BOGs typically have little to no contact with global terrorist groups like al Qaeda, so they independently plan and  that have bought into what we're doing,'' Taylor said. ``It almost helps sometimes, because you're able to get players into a rhythm and they know what their roles are. But it doesn't allow us to press, and that's a big part of what we do. And now everybody we face is pressing us, and that takes a toll.''

The loss of Broadus will be felt most. He was the Toreadors' biggest and strongest player, someone who was willing to do all the dirty work such as defending and rebounding.

``He was a glue guy,'' Taylor said.

It helps that Cook is coming along as another scoring option to help Smith and Farmar. Cook hit three 3-pointers in the first half and helped stretch Sylmar's defense with his long-range shooting.

``I was definitely feeling it tonight,'' Cook said. ``As soon as that first 3-pointer went in, I knew I was going to have a good shooting night.''

Sylmar (13-9) got 24 points from Chris Booker, but no one else reached double figures.
