BOYS' BASKETBALL: CLEVELAND IN A FOUL MOOD FREMONT WINS ON LATE MISTAKES FREMONT 54, CLEVELAND 52.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Game lost, lesson learned.

The Cleveland High of Reseda boys' basketball team gladly would sacrifice the latter to reverse the former. But this being the preseason part of their schedule, the Cavaliers will file away Wednesday's 54-52 loss to Fremont of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  in the memory bank and draw upon it for future use.

, Cleveland will use it as an example of what not to do during the final minute of a close game.

The Cavaliers doomed themselves with costly mistakes down the stretch - the most serious of which was Andre Murray's foul on Fremont's Danny Williams Danny Williams may refer to:

as Williams hoisted up a desperation 3-point shot.

Cleveland (8-4) led 52-49 at the time, but Williams calmly sank all three free throws to tie the score.

``That was tough to watch,'' Cleveland forward Jason Hill said. ``He misses the shot but he gets the three free throws and makes them to tie it up. That changed everything.''

Cleveland misfired on its next trip down the court, setting the stage again for Williams, who miraculously mi·rac·u·lous

``I got a horrible look at the basket,'' said Williams, who hit the shot with nine seconds remaining. ``Honestly, I was just trying to get any kind of shot off at that point. Lucky for us, it hit the glass and banked (in). We'll take it.''

Hill tried to get one final shot off for Cleveland, but two Fremont players swiped hard at the ball to knock it away just as he sliced toward the basket. Cleveland coach Andre Chevalier and the Cavaliers' bench erupted in anger, calling for a foul as time expired.

``I felt the contact and felt the swipe at the ball and I thought it was a foul,'' said Hill, who scored 10 points. ``But the referee A judicial officer who presides over civil hearings but usually does not have the authority or power to render judgment.

didn't see it that way, so I have to live with it. The bottom line is we didn't get the job done down the stretch. We had the lead and let it slip away. We have to learn from this.''

Corey Duncan scored 14 points to lead Cleveland. Lindsay Robinson had 12 for Fremont.

Cleveland was playing for the first time since wrapping up the Maui Christmas Classic on Dec. 21, which might explain its uneven play. Chevalier was worried that his team would need most of the first half to find its rhythm again, but he may have underestimated the effects of the layoff Layoff

Yet they still had a chance to win - and probably should have.

``We have to learn from this in order to get better,'' Chevalier said. ``Situations like this are going to come up again later in the season. Hopefully we won't foul or put them on the free-throw line free-throw line

``We just have to come to work at practice and figure out what we did wrong here and make sure it doesn't happen again,'' Hill said. ``We'll be fine.''
