BOYS' BASKETBALL: CALABASAS GOOD TO THE LAST SECOND CALABASAS 50, ROYAL 48.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

On such an unlikely night for Calabasas High's boys' basketball team, it was bound to be an unlikely player leading the Coyotes to victory.

the past three games, still recovering from an injury that cost him four weeks and 10 games, but he played a pivotal role for the Coyotes (13-3, 3-0), who remained unbeaten in league and tied for first place.

``To get any win on the road is great, but to hit the game-winning shot makes it even more special,'' said Fitzgerald, who scored eight points with four rebounds.

Fitzgerald also came up big late in the fourth quarter. He hit a driving layup to give Calabasas a 45-44 lead, then blocked a shot on Royal's subsequent possession, which led to Ryan Radley's breakaway break·a·way

``Hopefully, this is a sign that he's getting completely healthy,'' Calabasas coach Russell White said. ``Obviously, we really need him.''

It gets tougher from this point, as Calabasas plays Moorpark on Monday, then Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. ``This should open our eyes as to how it's going to be in league, especially on the road,'' White said. ``Royal played great. They had us scouted really well, and we didn't play as good as we can. The mark of a good team is to find a way to win even when you're not on top of your game.''

Drew Housman scored 13 points on an off-shooting night to lead Calabasas. No one else scored in double figures.

Newborn had a chance to give Royal the lead with 25 seconds remaining but misfired on two free throws.

After calling timeout with eight seconds remaining, Calabasas set up a play to get the ball in Housman's hands. Royal instead forced the ball to the Coyotes' Daniel Gabler, who drove to the baseline and found a cutting Fitzgerald, who made the winning layup.

``I'm starting to feel a lot better. My leg is finally coming around,'' Fitzgerald said. ``This is only going to make it feel better.''
