BOYS' BASKETBALL: AURAND ERA BEGINS RIGHT WHERE HIS PREDECESSOR LEFT OFF.

Byline: Jim Inghram Staff Writer

It was the start of a new era for the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  High boys' basketball team, but for one night anyway, it was remarkably similar to the previous ones.

Christian Aurand coached the Pioneers to an 87-34 victory over Franklin of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  on Tuesday in the season opener for the Pioneers and the first round of the Simi Valley tournament.

Aurand, who took over for Dean Bradshaw, had been an assistant for many years for the Pioneers before taking over this fall when Bradshaw retired.

``I'm not really concerned about that (first victory as a head coach),'' Aurand said. ``I'm glad the team got their first win of the season. It's not about me. It's about them.''

The Pioneers, who will play Granada Hills in a second-round game at 8 tonight at Simi Valley, jumped out to a 21-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back against the outmanned Panthers.

Simi Valley dominated defensively and controlled the boards.

On several possessions the Panthers could only manage a wild off-balance shot from well past the 3-point line.

``We pretty much had the upper-hand the whole way,'' Aurand said. ``It was a nice win for us.''

Senior forward Brett Michel paced the Pioneers with 23 points. Branduinn Fullove added 21 and junior forward Dustin Villepigue scored 19.

The Pioneers stretched their lead throughout the game and led by as many as 57 when Jered Weaver Jered David Weaver (born October 4, 1982 in Northridge, California), is a Major League Baseball starting pitcher with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

``We had a problem with turnovers tonight,'' said Littlerock coach Ben Dale. ``I think it might have been fatigue. We had an overtime game (Monday) night (a 70-63 victory over Barstow) and our legs looked soft.''

``I don't think we are in the same league as they are,'' Dale said. ``But if you want to get better and test yourself, you have to play the best.''
