BOYS' BASKETBALL: A.V. OFF TO FAST START.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Two weeks into his annual transition from football player to basketball player, Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Burton are making a seamless conversion from football to basketball. As a result, the Antelopes (7-3) are off to a rapid start and showing no effects from losing 6-foot-9 center Chawn Johnson on an offseason transfer to Antelope Valley Christian.

Crenshaw was disappointed when he learned Johnson had transferred - ``Any time you lose as player that big and that good, it's going to hurt your team,'' Crenshaw said - but he's pleased with the way the Antelopes have made up for the loss.

``It's a matter of everybody doing their part and playing the type of game that will make us successful,'' Crenshaw said. ``So far, we're doing what we need to do.''

--Tiring night: Antelope Valley Christian's Johnson is making a big impact with his new team, but even he couldn't help the Eagles beat Hollywood in Saturday's championship game of the A.V. Christian tournament.

Even at 6-9, Johnson is just one player. Antelope Valley Christian was limited to six players - one called up from the junior-varsity team - after five of the team's international students went home for Christmas break.

``Man, I've never been through anything like that,'' Johnson said. ``We were definitely short-handed, and it showed.''

That was evident in the second half, when Hollywood outscored the Eagles 51-30 to pull away.

``That was fatigue fatigue, in engineering

setting in,'' Johnson said. ``But it's hard to play a full game with only (six) guys.''

Johnson is happy with his move to A.V. Christian, a transfer he said was based on academics. Johnson, who is being recruited by several colleges, has dramatically improved his grade-point average since transferring. As a result, he is becoming a more attractive recruit to college programs.

``For me, it was all about school,'' said Johnson, who last week was offered a scholarship by Iowa State. ``I needed to get my grades straightened out. That was my main priority.''

--Rethinking the game: Highland guard Tomoreo Allen Al·len , Edgar 1892-1943.

knew things would be different this year when he moved from point guard to shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards. . But not this different.

Focusing more on shooting than passing, Allen is averaging 30.9 points per game.

``I'm even a little bit surprised by how much I'm scoring,'' Allen said. ``That's a lot of points.''

Highland coach Jeff Smith estimated Allen's scoring average would improve from about 18 points to 23-25 this year. He based the numbers on the offense revolving around Allen, rather than Allen running the offense.

``But I honestly didn't think he'd be scoring this much, not 31 points per game,'' Smith said ``But I'll take it.''
