BOYS' BASKETBALL: A.V. CHRISTIAN HOPES TO ADD DEPTH.Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer John Cho, Jamal Flanagan, Matthew Nurse and Peter Beaudin. ``My four warriors
The Antelope Valley Christian boys' basketball coach David Nurse. That foursome will take the Eagles back into battle next year, with the hope of ending the season on a higher note than this one finished. Don't get the wrong idea. A.V. Christian has plenty of pleasant memories from 1998-99. The Eagles went 21-4 after last season's five-win total, reached the Division V-A V-A abbr. ventriculoatrial championship game at UC Irvine's Bren Center before losing 77-60 to Price and participated in the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, state playoffs. The Eagles lost 74-50 at Cambria Coast Union on Tuesday night in the opening round. ``All of our (key) kids are back next year. We want to come back here. It was a lot of fun,'' said David Nurse, flanked by his ``Four warriors'' Beaudin, son Matthew Nurse, Flanagan and Cho, in the interview room at the Bren Center following the Price game. Just how important they are to A.V. Christian's success was evident in the Coast Union defeat. Beaudin, Nurse and Flanagan all averaged at least 20 points per game during the season. They combined for 50 of the Eagles' 60 points against Price. In the Coast Union game, however, Beaudin scored 17 and Nurse hit five 3-pointers. But Flanagan, a sophomore forward, was held to two, roughly 19 points below his season average. Those three, plus rebounding specialist Cho, are as good as anyone in Division V. But there was little support behind them for the Eagles, a disadvantage David Nurse hopes to remedy next season. Last summer, Cho, Beaudin and Matthew Nurse, all juniors, and the sophomore Flanagan, attended several camps and clinics to refine their skills. They just hope that work ethic work ethic n. It might be Orlando Flanagan, a 5-11 sophomore forward. He wasn't a big factor on an Eagles team whose stats were dominated by four players. Flanagan could step into the starting spot vacated by graduating senior Scott Hannah. Then again, nothing is certain about returning players. Flanagan transferred to A.V.
