BOYS: STEPPING DOWN TO GO UP HART'S MCQUEEN A BETTER PLAYER AFTER YEAR OF JUNIOR VARSITY SEASONING.

As a starting guard for Hart High's boys' team, McQueen is averaging 12 points a game while helping to direct the Foothill League's winningest team; first-place Hart is 15-2, 2-0 entering tonight's 7 p.m. showdown at Burroughs of Burbank (12-6, 1-1). More important, McQueen no longer is looking over his shoulder after being demoted to the junior varsity junior varsity

McQueen, a senior, has spent the past 12 months on a mission to improve, and he's done just that after a humbling junior season. ``Actually, it was really tough for me last year when I got sent down,'' McQueen said. ``I'm not sure why it happened. I think I just got a little too comfortable, and I wasn't doing my part. This year, I'm a lot more aggressive.''

``What made the whole thing especially tough was Brandon's such a great kid,'' Kelly said. ``But I knew he was a player, and I wanted him to get playing time. I think he understood, and he didn't show any outward frustration about it. McQueen's development has proved especially important because Hart needed a play-making guard after graduating its top outside shooters from last season.

Mike Gentry is gone this season, but Brandon is filling his shoes. He's been hitting his outside shots, and he's been there for us whenever we've needed him.''

a little success of its own this season.

With two of the league's tallest players, 6-foot-1 seniors Rachel Bates and Alexa Jahnke, coming on strong as the season progresses, Canyon (11-7, 1-1) already has won the minimum 11 games to qualify for the Southern Section playoffs as an at-large entry.

But the team still has eight games remaining - starting with tonight's 7 p.m. matchup against visiting Valencia (13-2, 2-0) - and Bates and Jahnke are hoping the good times keep rolling.

``We're doing a lot better than we've ever done before,'' Bates said. ``I've been waiting four years for the team to finally be this good.''

Jahnke, who moved to the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. ``I think we're really starting to play as a team. Everyone knows their role this year,'' she said.

Lately, Bates' job has been to pick up the offense, which lacks the punch of a reliable outside shooter or fast-breaking guards. She's averaging 12 points and eight rebounds in league competition after averaging about eight points during the first month.

``Rachel is on fire. She has really come on strong,'' coach Troy Best said.

Jahnke, meanwhile, is the team's designated defender. She scores only about five points per game, but she's averaging 9.0 rebounds - including 15 in a recent nonleague game against Garfield of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  - and 2.5 blocked shots.

her with Ashlee Trebilcock, and she's OK with that.

``I realize exactly what I have to do, which is to lead my team in rebounds,'' she said.

Having the league's tallest post players gives Canyon a significant advantage. If opponents can't hit from the outside, they could be in trouble.

``It really helps having two 6-foot-1 girls,'' Best said. ``A lot of teams have no other choice but to go small and try to create mismatches.''

BOYS: GAME OF THE WEEK

HART (15-2, 2-0) at SAUGUS (13-5, 2-0)

7 p.m. Tuesday

Outlook: The prime matchup figures to be Hart's Adam Rich vs. Saugus' B.J. Willkomm as two of the league's most prolific all-around players go head to head with first place on the line.

The other key is for Hart to find a way to stop Saugus guards Shant Bicakci and Neil Diorio, both of whom are capable of taking over a game with their 3-point shooting. Defensively, the onus will be on Hart guard Brandon McQueen, although he's only 5-foot-11 and is more of a scorer than a defender. Also keep in mind one of Hart's best defensive players, 6-3 guard Ryan Wolfe, isn't expected to play because he's recovering from an ankle injury.

Saugus is tough in its own gym, as Hart can attest To solemnly declare verbally or in writing that a particular document or testimony about an event is a true and accurate representation of the facts; to bear witness to. To formally certify by a signature that the signer has been present at the execution of a particular writing so as  to after losing there last year in a result that was considered the biggest upset of the season. This time, the teams are more evenly matched.

GIRLS: GAME OF THE WEEK

VALENCIA (13-2, 2-0) at HART (16-1, 2-0)

5:30 p.m. Friday

Outlook: In past seasons, Valencia has had difficulty against top-notch opponents, and that's exactly what the Vikings will see in Hart, clearly the most complete team in the Santa Clarita Valley and beyond.

Hart guards Ashlee Trebilcock and Taylor Lilley both are excellent shooters, so Valencia guards Kelley Tarver and Day Weathersby must provide outside pressure. If they don't, Hart figures to stretch Valencia's defense and open numerous holes; the last thing Valencia wants is to fall behind early in Hart's gym.

The winner of this game has the inside track on first place because none of the league's other four teams are as talented as these two. But the win-loss records are slightly misleading because Hart has played much more difficult competition, so the Indians figure to be heavy favorites.

LOOK BACK

Saugus' boys' team, led by Shant Bicakci and B.J. Willkomm, established itself as an early league title contender after pulling away in the fourth quarter to win 87-77 at Valencia on Tuesday. Bicakci scored a career-high 28 points, and Willkomm added 26 to become the school's all-time leading scorer. ``I think our youth showed and their experience showed at the end,'' Valencia coach Rocket Collins said. ``In all our previous games, we've either been way ahead or way behind.'' ...
